Greta Thunberg arrested at a protest supporting Palestine Action hunger strikers

Climate activist Greta Thunberg has been arrested in central London at a demonstration in support of Palestine Action hunger strikers.

@statsguy except for the brief spell of Nye Bevan at health, no British Government has ever had a moral compass.

@Thebratdragon I think that may be a bit unfair on Blair's first term. He did a lot of good stuff in his early years before he went over to the Dark Side.

But certainly if you take his time as PM as a whole, then the moral compass had well and truly fallen down a supermassive black hole.

@statsguy that was electoral promises, not an actual moral compass.
@Thebratdragon Yeah, maybe. It seemed like good stuff at the time. But maybe with hindsight it was just what he felt he needed to do to get elected.

@Thebratdragon @statsguy

Mo Mowlam.

When she died, Blair's moral compass was gone. But it took a few years before it became apparent and he sent countless people to their death by looking for WMD that did not exist.

@Lily_and_frog @statsguy

her and him stopping listening to Robin Cook.

@noodlemaz @Lily_and_frog @Thebratdragon @statsguy

Any good stuff Blair did was mostly only due to neoliberal capitalism providing short term gains, on the back of an economy still heavily dependent on fossil fuels.

The authorities of the time did also seem to turn a blind eye to drugs use and hedonism in society, maybe as a distraction technique that nudged people away from protesting, or simply because they had been starved of resources.

As soon as the Middle Easterners didn't just hand over their oil, Blairs tune changed - I think this is also why he is so determined to be part of the Western neocolonialists "rebuilding" Gaza, its a personal vendetta - if the West had won in the war and petrol was a quid a litre, Blair would have been considered a war hero..

@vfrmedia @Lily_and_frog @Thebratdragon @statsguy we know from other countries that 'drug use' is not universally a bad thing. Much of its problems come from criminalisation, gang association and blocking access to services that help people out of destructive addiction.
People have always and will always use drugs. It's making it safe that's the issue.
@noodlemaz @vfrmedia @Lily_and_frog @Thebratdragon Totally. And organising society so that the supply of drugs is in the hands of organised crime rather than licensed pharmacies doesn't strike me as the best way to make it safe.

@statsguy @noodlemaz @Lily_and_frog @Thebratdragon

And that is the big problem. Instead of doing that, both New Labour and even to a lesser extent the Tory/Lib Dem coalition adopted a half-arsed "libertarian" attitude to "middle class" drug use vainly hoping that partydrugs users would miraculously self-regulate whilst doing very little to make usage safer or provide effective services for addiction recovery or rehabilitation.

So the NHS and Social Services ended up picking up the pieces and there's now a backlash of heavier prohibition (which also feeds the fascist pipeline, a lot of the alt-right men are former ravers)

@vfrmedia @statsguy @noodlemaz @Lily_and_frog

you see it in the USA, big words about the cartels etc, by coke heads using that exact product....

@Thebratdragon @statsguy @noodlemaz @Lily_and_frog

the USA barely attempts to enforce its drug laws, whereas the UK (a far smaller country with a more developed and centralised surveillance network) does - especially against those who drive cars (Cameron when he was in govt openly admitted he was goldplating the then new drug-driving laws more than anywhere else in Europe to reinforce prohibition).

Which is another pipeline to the fash - there's lots of middle aged folk who are bitter they can't still get away with couple of cheeky lines after a few pints and drive home like they once regularly did in the 90s/00s..

@noodlemaz @vfrmedia @Lily_and_frog @statsguy

see also sex work, the laws against both have far more to do with puritan values than any actual purpose.

@statsguy

It wasn't what Blair did in his first term so much as what he didn't do (ie roll back Thatcher's reforms).

@Thebratdragon

@Thebratdragon

A gift from Norman Lamont to Tony Blair to ensure the longevity of Thatcher's reforms.

@statsguy

@ReggieHere @statsguy @Thebratdragon he didn't roll back Section 28 right away, Labour's stance on Queer Rights is shaky at best.

@Lazarou @ReggieHere @statsguy

and the 2003 gender act only happened after court rulings made a need for one imminent.

@statsguy SO much, time, resources and money pissed against a wall instead of actual policing - which they are fucking awful at these days. Get your priorities right Met.
@statsguy This whole PA affair is a textbook example of government overreach. Labelling them as a terrorist organization is taking a sledgehammer to a gnat.
@statsguy Sadly, I think it lost it long ago the callous indifference to hunger strikers and apparent indifference to the possibility of idealistic young people who seek to end genocide tells us everything we need to know.
@statsguy
You can't lose something you never had.
@statsguy nobody really likes the British. Napoleon purposely sold the Midwest to the first settlers known as the Louisiana purchase knowing full well it would make America rival and defeat England. Russia absolutely despises the UK. Argentina hates the English especially after the Falklands battle. I really can't think of a single country that thinks anything good comes out of the UK. Their Royal family are bunch of inbred housing pedophiles. Their Parliament are always bribed. China wanted them out of Hong Kong the same as India got sick of their abuse. Yea they don't really have too many friends due to their "good" nature.
@x41h Who pissed in your breakfast cereal today, Russian dude? @statsguy
@cstross @statsguy Nobody. Stating facts. American revolution didn't spark because the English monarchy was so fair. Other countries feel the same way do they not? Guess you would have to do bit of traveling to gain others perspectives.
@cstross ah so you are the one who removed my post quoting directly a piece from The Guardian citing that what I posted was Pro Russian propaganda. You are ridiculous. It came from The Guardian the biggest anti Russian journalist site out there. Loser.
@statsguy they can't lose what they have never had.
UK police leaders to call for β€˜non-crime hate incidents’ to be scrapped

Review will request β€˜commonsense’ system with most serious incidents recorded as antisocial behaviour

The Guardian

@statsguy

Worth remembering, she has been arrested for supporting the prisoners, not directly PA, so an abuse of power right there.

@uc Yeah. If this ever gets before a jury the government lawyers are going to feel really silly.

@statsguy

So according to the UK government, Greta Thunberg is now a dangerous terrorist.

I'm beginning to think the UK government may have lost its moral compass.

UK has Puppets, Most of Labour, including Keir Stalinist Starmer were/maybe still are, financed by friends of Israel. Influenced by the Ghoul Genocide state and trump.

UK is rapidly becoming one of the most Orwellian repressive country's on the planet

@statsguy

I admire Greta, she embodies the best of the 60's and 70's Hippie movement before we all sold out to the man we railed against.

This is also an example of how S.T.U.P.I.D. governments are. Arresting her gave her protest worldwide attention. Ignoring her and there would have been very little media coverage.

@statsguy but how can you lose what you never really had? /s
@statsguy Hello from Ireland. πŸ‘‹πŸΌ Can confirm it's never had one.
@clickhere Harsh but fair
@statsguy It is. (There are reasons, over centuries, why I speak English, for example, and they're all deeply disturbing.)
@clickhere Yeah. And Ireland is far from the only country that Britain has royally screwed over at various times in our dishonourable history.
@statsguy Greta Thunberg awakens each morning looking for a reason to disrupt something or some bear to poke. She has been diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome, obsessive-compulsive disorder and in this world, a million causes to gain attention. Also she's human and not always right.
@PerryM @statsguy Any other reason to criticize her from the Hasbara troll farm?

@JackEnrod @statsguy

One thing for sure, I am always sincere and I damn sure mean what I say! I have no idea what you are suggesting.

Greta has her own likes and dislikes and I have mine but I don't spirit the world getting arrested to get attention.

By the way, I just read a few of your posts. It seems that you go around criticizing and name calling, like the Orange Turd ... 17 followers in 2.5 years. Good going Jack!

@statsguy It's a government, a bureaucracy, it doesn't have a morality compass. As with all bureaucracies if it can target compliant people / easy to deal with people it will do so over actual violent thugs because it makes bureaucrats feel like they are doing something to justify their paycheck whilst dealing with people who aren't going to fight back. Much easier for them to be dealing with Palestine Action than to be dealing with ISIS

The #uk is turning into the trial by #kafka

@statsguy our Lyudmila. Lady hope.
@statsguy does moral compass pay checks, reduce debt, satisfy capitalists sponsors and get re-elected?

@PH7831 It probably does all of those things except satisfy capitalist sponsors.

And guess which of them the government prioritises...

@statsguy I feel

s t r o n g c o n t e m p t

towards the UK regime when I am seeing this.

@statsguy

UK and moral compass in the same sentence 🀣🀣🀣🀣

@statsguy Nothing but an admission of guilt. If they are so scared of one little girl, that they have to charge her with terrorism... maybe it's because she's pointing at the emperor and telling everbody that he has no cloths. We absolutely can't have that, can we?

@statsguy does she break the law in an attempt to enforce her political views?

(It shouldn't matter whether you agree with the views or not)

@StompyRobot The interesting question to me is not whether she is breaking the law (and I don't know, that's for a court to decide) but whether the law is reasonable in the first place.

Just because something is against the law doesn't make it morally wrong if the law itself is unjust.

@statsguy
The argument "we shouldn't obey or enforce laws we disagree with" has had a lot of problems in the past.
Changing the law to be better is obviously the best outcome!
@StompyRobot Absolutely. But since Thunberg doesn't have the power to do that, the best she can do is help to demonstrate how ridiculous the current law is.
@statsguy have to assume 'beginning to' is sarcasm there
@statsguy The dangerous terrorists are in the government
