Christmas Songs

Esperanto music has a long tradition of translated folk and traditional songs, going back to the earliest days of the Movado. As just about every European country has its own distinctive Christmas songs, it’s unsurprising that many of these have also been translated. However, there is a significant difference between ordinary folk songs and Christmas songs: the emotions that go along with Christmas music are much more lost in translation. This is largely due to the fact that we associate certain songs with Christmas not so much because of the music or even the lyrics, but because of tradition and nostalgia: a song is “Christmassy” because it’s something that we have always sung at Christmas ever since we were children.
