@kauer Upon copyright expiry, the closed source software enters the public domain. However, the source code could still remain inaccessible to the public. This significantly reduces the value of the software as a building block for new works and follow-on innovation.

@cathill At least in theory any book publisher in the UK must provide a copy to the British Museum. I don't think they'll chase people for it.
Defining that more widely would include published software.
