An interesting side-by-side comparison of a traditional Glasgow tenement and a more modern replacement on Dodside Place in the Sandyhills area of the city. Both are four storeys high, but the modern building is only three-quarters size of the neighbouring tenement.

This difference is primarily driven by lower ceiling heights in each flat. The windows, and so the amount of natural light they let in, also differs substantially between the two. In particular, the bay windows of the tenement not only maximuse the amount of natural light entering each flat, they also increase the internal floor area. In contrast, the balcony and recessed window of the modern building reduce the light entering the flats and reduce the internal floor space.

However, the smaller windows and smaller volume does make the flats in more modern building easier and cheaper to heat. The point here is not to say one is better than the other, but instead to highlight the differences in the priorities of the architects of each one. Effectively, this can be summarised as light and space for the tenements vs ease of heating, and probably cost of construction for the more modern flats.

Given the importance of natural light for the well-being of humans, if I had the choice, I'd always got for the former rather than the latter.

@thisismyglasgow

Absolutely. It's about dignity as well, treating human beings as more than flesh units to fit within brick and mortar units for maximum efficiency. I think of the space around me and above my head as room for thoughts and dreams to live.

The newer ones have not stood the test of time well and will probably need replacing before the older ones
