Just finished the board meeting with @esraa @karienbez @biz @haubles @renchap @Gargron where we spoke a lot about the strategy for next year.
What do you wish for Mastodon to come true in 2026?

@mellifluousbox
Some kind of ‘groups’ function for discussion of specific topics.

Ideally separate from regular public feeds.

Thanks for asking!

@mellifluousbox Que milhões de brasileiros invadam o fediverso...!
@mellifluousbox Better tools for account migration. People lose their old posts when servers are frequently shut down, and it would be great to finally have a set of features for importing past (backdated) posts. It would also mean that Mastodon would be a lot more compliant with the EU data portability regulations, as the current situation is a bit off from what the laws say.

@autiomaa @mellifluousbox Been saying this for ages! Someone explained that the reason it hasn't yet been implemented is that it would be a headache for smaller servers, due to the storage burden if a newcomer uploads a large content archive with lots of media.

But thousands of folks unable to leave an increasingly difficult-to-moderate flagship instance over reluctance to abandon their posting histories, is the bigger problem, as it threatens decentralisation and enables spammers and scammers.

@ApostateEnglishman @mellifluousbox There is a clear workaround for that. Allow server admins to limit the data volume of imported data. Additional protections for admins would be to add limits for how fast backdated posts would get distributed (think of speed limits for the past backdated posts, while current and future posts would get the full download speed).

In any case, there are more than one way to solve the problem.

@mellifluousbox positioning as the way for EU leaders to communicate, instead of the American censored algorithmic place

@[email protected] All European politicians should have official accounts on instances from the democratic institutions they serve. Could also be from their political parties. See An Open Letter to All European Politicians and Leaders to Abandon X/Twitter https://leavex.eu/ #LeaveX #Mastodon

@mellifluousbox Please no A.I. 😟
@Chris @mellifluousbox Oh, yes, and THIS. Please NO AI-whatever. Thank you.
@Chris @mellifluousbox that would definitely be a waste of time, resources and user base.
@Chris @mellifluousbox
Yes! For Mastodon to be an AI-free refuge from the polluted world.
@mellifluousbox I wish for Mastodon to become a super-simple-low-level-entry-platform for completely normal people like my mom to join the fediverse. (Aka: fix the onboarding process to be inclusive, non-judgemental, friendly, easy-to-use, well organised, transparent and understandable for non-techy people, so everyone finds their way to a server with people and accounts they might connect to)
@mellifluousbox
Governments and public offices setting up their own servers and using Mastodon as they main micro blogging service.

@mellifluousbox

It would be interesting to be able to mark an instance as a designated backup location, where you can continuously mirror your account. If the primary instance disappears, you can "promote" the backup instance to become your new primary, and a "move" will be broadcast to the network with a special key to verify it.

@mellifluousbox
Wide adoption (of hosted instances) by public figures and public institutions.

Edit: typo.

@mellifluousbox resist enshittification with AI or whatever else the former Twitter employees on the board of directors may suggest
@mellifluousbox Better passkey support and the ability to move all of one’s own posts when migrating between instances.

@mellifluousbox full `Article` support, so that I do not have to leave Mastodon to read a blog-post :)

#longformers

@mellifluousbox custom visibility/addressing/circles for posts so that you can make a post that’s only visible to certain people. Support for collections, like collections of photos.

@jesseplusplus Yes, circles would be an awesome addition!

Or at least "mutuals only" posts.

@mellifluousbox

@mellifluousbox i would like Mastodon, which is the strongest "brand" and organisation in the fediverse, to facilitate moving "regular people" who intuitively know something is wrong with big tech off fb, insta etc. Not everyone will, but there are plenty non tech people who'd want to but don't have time/energy to nerd in on fediverse. To do that we need a replacement for FB groups and the ability to authenticate (Open ID sort of thing) across multiple services (PeerTube, FlohMarkt, Mobilizon).
@mellifluousbox I'm thinking of users who are passively using FB to "stay in touch" or be able to read what's new in their small local community (village, neighbourhood) or to not miss invitations to parties or local events. The ability for these users to authenticate through their Mastodon identity to Mobilizon, Flohmarkt, {yet not created services} and a groups feature would enable us to get them off big tech.
@mellifluousbox you can convince that kind of person to register one new account to be compatible with us purists, but not four or five.
@mellifluousbox (1) More than four images on a post
(2) Posts with both polls and images/video

@mellifluousbox I hope the people who need to find their people will find Mastodon and find their people.

I hope everyone else leaves us alone (governments, nazis, etc.)

@mellifluousbox More inroads in addressing the concerns of at-risk groups so that they can feel safer here than on the commercial platforms that are (pretending to be) more accommodating of them. It doesn't have to be perfect, but it does have to be directionally (and marketably) clear that this is a strong goal.

And maybe some tools for those with unmanageably huge followings (celebs, for example) to better enjoy the platform.

@mellifluousbox

Implement ActivityPub C2S API, so we can use Mastodon as a communications platform and not just as a short text dissemination machine. So we can publish events, participate in threads, share videos, etc...

Better moderation tools.

For example, if you block an instance's admin who's an arse, then do not show anything from them, no exceptions being made.

Or “your reports” screen, where you can show your past reports and retract them when you have e.g. made them in error.

@mellifluousbox changing character limit through server admin! 6 years of discussion! https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/12265
Let the admins easily setup the character limits · Issue #12265 · mastodon/mastodon

Pitch I found useful to keep the 500 characters limit but many instances are already changed this limits, so why can't we let the admins to easily decide how their istances manage the characters li...

@yehor @mellifluousbox this would be such a quick "win", and I see no downsides.

The default can still stay at 500, what's the big deal?

@mellifluousbox domain names as aliases to our instance accounts. Make portability easier. Post migrations would also help with this.

@mellifluousbox On the technical site, getting the ActivityPub client API would be nice.

Other than that, I would whish for the Mastodon app to display other servers than mastodon.social by default.

@mellifluousbox @qbi become a safe space for jews, blacks and all other marginalized people
@mellifluousbox Definitely more diversity, more so than simply more people on here.
@Stefan Bohacek More diversity, meaning not everyone has to be on Mastodon or other very similar platform. :) Mastodon defaults are so basic it gives fediverse a bad name, honestly.

@mellifluousbox For it to go back to when clicks on the profile picture to lead through to the person's bio (on the originating instance, as it does in glitch and hometown still)

This has been my wish since about 2022 but by christ one day it'll happen, I swear

@babe @mellifluousbox I don't see this getting reverted, too many people get lost when they are redirected away from their server.

@Gargron @babe @mellifluousbox how about adding a "go to origin instance" button in the profile hover and/or at least a single-click link/icon on the same-instance profile page. Or a user preference to specify the "click on pfp" behaviour.

RN it feels like too many clicks for something users might need to do routinely if your instance hasn't brought in any of the subject's posts yet leaving the cached profile largely empty

@interpipes @Gargron @mellifluousbox tis a bit of a ball ache when dealing with a lot of follow requests, which has always been my lamentation.

Used to be a breeze just clicking through, vibe checking, and approving/denying. Now it's so much clicking it's laborious

@babe @Gargron @mellifluousbox aye, the bulk vibe check is specifically what I had in mind

I'm not even a fedi main character and even I think it's a PITA

@interpipes @Gargron @mellifluousbox I had a large amount come through over a few days a while back and spent ages trying to clear it. I still haven't.

I've been tempted to open up and just give up but the vibes straight up ran screaming from so many it's just eugh

@mellifluousbox

Backfilling profile on follow, the PR is now there for you to review! 😃

This would help new people so much, seeing blank profiles is the number one barrier people mention on @FediFollows as they think accounts are dead.

@mellifluousbox

That mastodon remains a social media by all means.

@mellifluousbox I wish more people from academia will migrate to Mastodon, specially from the #STS field
@Felix Hlatky support for FEP-171b conversation containers instead of fetching replies every 15 minutes.
@mellifluousbox Personally I think I'd like to see a bigger emphasis on the average user through ease of use and trust and safety. There's been such a focus on catering to a majority white European tech-savvy and legalistically privacy-conscious audience that it's resulted in nearly every other demographic feeling confused, isolated, and frustrated.

@mellifluousbox

easier onboarding. it still feels linux-nerdy at mastodon and i believe its a reason to not join

ai integration

integrated own-browser based news collection with topics to pick, improved chat like dm‘s, call function, video meet function, separate video & photo feeds, file-sharing a la we-transfer, improved global search, global follow option, payments, maps, traffic, public transportation, booking

more fancy ui design

make it a social hub for daily needs

@mellifluousbox a way to follow a hashtag as part of a list so it doesn’t show in your main feed.
@mellifluousbox better UI designing DM and other good features

@mellifluousbox I would like to see starter packs rolled out more evenly than quotes were. By which I mean, I hope everyone is eligible to be included in them.

The privacy setting for quotes rolled out before quotes arrived, but those of us on servers that have the quote settings but aren’t on 4.5 yet can’t be quoted.

I hope this is not repeated with Packs—I don’t think it will be a good dynamic to give that kind of exposure only to accounts on bleeding-edge servers.

@mellifluousbox A standards based post migration solution would be nifty!
@box464 @mellifluousbox +1 to this! I’d love to see an implementation of the LOLA work on mastodon
