@mellifluousbox
Some kind of ‘groups’ function for discussion of specific topics.
Ideally separate from regular public feeds.
Thanks for asking!
@autiomaa @mellifluousbox Been saying this for ages! Someone explained that the reason it hasn't yet been implemented is that it would be a headache for smaller servers, due to the storage burden if a newcomer uploads a large content archive with lots of media.
But thousands of folks unable to leave an increasingly difficult-to-moderate flagship instance over reluctance to abandon their posting histories, is the bigger problem, as it threatens decentralisation and enables spammers and scammers.
@ApostateEnglishman @mellifluousbox There is a clear workaround for that. Allow server admins to limit the data volume of imported data. Additional protections for admins would be to add limits for how fast backdated posts would get distributed (think of speed limits for the past backdated posts, while current and future posts would get the full download speed).
In any case, there are more than one way to solve the problem.
@[email protected] All European politicians should have official accounts on instances from the democratic institutions they serve. Could also be from their political parties. See An Open Letter to All European Politicians and Leaders to Abandon X/Twitter https://leavex.eu/ #LeaveX #Mastodon
It would be interesting to be able to mark an instance as a designated backup location, where you can continuously mirror your account. If the primary instance disappears, you can "promote" the backup instance to become your new primary, and a "move" will be broadcast to the network with a special key to verify it.
@mellifluousbox
Wide adoption (of hosted instances) by public figures and public institutions.
Edit: typo.
@mellifluousbox full `Article` support, so that I do not have to leave Mastodon to read a blog-post :)
@jesseplusplus Yes, circles would be an awesome addition!
Or at least "mutuals only" posts.
@mellifluousbox I hope the people who need to find their people will find Mastodon and find their people.
I hope everyone else leaves us alone (governments, nazis, etc.)
@mellifluousbox More inroads in addressing the concerns of at-risk groups so that they can feel safer here than on the commercial platforms that are (pretending to be) more accommodating of them. It doesn't have to be perfect, but it does have to be directionally (and marketably) clear that this is a strong goal.
And maybe some tools for those with unmanageably huge followings (celebs, for example) to better enjoy the platform.

Better moderation tools.
For example, if you block an instance's admin who's an arse, then do not show anything from them, no exceptions being made.
Or “your reports” screen, where you can show your past reports and retract them when you have e.g. made them in error.
@yehor @mellifluousbox this would be such a quick "win", and I see no downsides.
The default can still stay at 500, what's the big deal?
@mellifluousbox On the technical site, getting the ActivityPub client API would be nice.
Other than that, I would whish for the Mastodon app to display other servers than mastodon.social by default.
@mellifluousbox For it to go back to when clicks on the profile picture to lead through to the person's bio (on the originating instance, as it does in glitch and hometown still)
This has been my wish since about 2022 but by christ one day it'll happen, I swear
@Gargron @babe @mellifluousbox how about adding a "go to origin instance" button in the profile hover and/or at least a single-click link/icon on the same-instance profile page. Or a user preference to specify the "click on pfp" behaviour.
RN it feels like too many clicks for something users might need to do routinely if your instance hasn't brought in any of the subject's posts yet leaving the cached profile largely empty
@interpipes @Gargron @mellifluousbox tis a bit of a ball ache when dealing with a lot of follow requests, which has always been my lamentation.
Used to be a breeze just clicking through, vibe checking, and approving/denying. Now it's so much clicking it's laborious
@babe @Gargron @mellifluousbox aye, the bulk vibe check is specifically what I had in mind
I'm not even a fedi main character and even I think it's a PITA
@interpipes @Gargron @mellifluousbox I had a large amount come through over a few days a while back and spent ages trying to clear it. I still haven't.
I've been tempted to open up and just give up but the vibes straight up ran screaming from so many it's just eugh
Backfilling profile on follow, the PR is now there for you to review! 😃
This would help new people so much, seeing blank profiles is the number one barrier people mention on @FediFollows as they think accounts are dead.
That mastodon remains a social media by all means.
easier onboarding. it still feels linux-nerdy at mastodon and i believe its a reason to not join
ai integration
integrated own-browser based news collection with topics to pick, improved chat like dm‘s, call function, video meet function, separate video & photo feeds, file-sharing a la we-transfer, improved global search, global follow option, payments, maps, traffic, public transportation, booking
more fancy ui design
make it a social hub for daily needs
@mellifluousbox I would like to see starter packs rolled out more evenly than quotes were. By which I mean, I hope everyone is eligible to be included in them.
The privacy setting for quotes rolled out before quotes arrived, but those of us on servers that have the quote settings but aren’t on 4.5 yet can’t be quoted.
I hope this is not repeated with Packs—I don’t think it will be a good dynamic to give that kind of exposure only to accounts on bleeding-edge servers.
