@bobjonkman asks:

There have been some "incidents" during the #WaterlooRegion #CriticalMass rides, much more entertaining in recollection than they were at the time.

Q4. Do you have any tales from Critical Mass rides? Or other group rides?

@ascentale @bobjonkman @bikenite #BikeNite A4. Never been to a Critical Mass or any other group ride, but almost all of the bike books I read seem to imply that Critical Mass folks are a bunch of hooligans, etc. etc., with the claim that they make car drivers more likely to be angry at bicyclists (making me think they are more my type of people... since car drivers ALREADY are angry at bicyclists usually)
@ai6yr @ascentale @bobjonkman @bikenite That hasn't been their reputation that I've noticed up here - can't say about anywhere else, obviously. But they're still going and hopefully I will get to one someday xD
@ai6yr @ascentale @bobjonkman @bikenite You should watch the documentary on CM. Esp how they were in the beginning. They were thoughtful, and enormously influential in ways that gained us more infrastructure. Cops & car-centric pols didn't like that. https://mas.to/@meganL/115711875725044005 #BikeNite
@ascentale @bobjonkman @bikenite A4) I've never been on a group ride. #BikeNite

@ascentale @bobjonkman @bikenite A4. I've been on one of a Critical Mass ride with an "incident". But, the fuzz turned tail and ran when we cited ORS 814.430 2 (c).

Can't really think of anything that rises to the level of "an incident" ... mostly just humorous anecdotes.

#bikeNite

@ascentale @bobjonkman @bikenite A4 Oh! I just remembered a story I heard about a Westside Wednesday ride of years past.

The group had stopped in a park parking lot for a water break when multiple cop cars came speeding into the parking lot and a swarm of ... confused looking cops piled out.

Apparently, someone had reported a "bunch of bikers fighting in the park" ... as in motorcycle bikers.

The cops reminded the cyclists that the park is closed after sundown, and left.

@ascentale @bobjonkman @bikenite A4. We’re kind of up and down with Critical Mass here in Nashville. In the first version a year+ ago, the police apparently heard some um… random stories from rides elsewhere & completely freaked out. So the first time we rode, they blocked off the entire route for us. There were less good things in following months - like them inserting motorcycle officers in the middle of the bikes, causing some real hazards. #BikeNite

@ascentale @bobjonkman @bikenite A4: seeing a cop pulled out of his police car and shoved up against it by a motorist who was really, really angry about being delayed by Mass. Luckily this is Australia so he survived and may even have escaped criminal penalties.

Similarly, a pedestrian stepped out into mass and punched a cyclist. A velocop. Who very politely picked the pedestrian up, moved them back and suggested they stay there until the cop felt like dealing with them.

@ascentale @bobjonkman @bikenite A4: a mass during an antiglobalisation protest that was so badly managed by the cops that we rode onto the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Where we were stopped and a guy at the front arrested. About 30 minutes later (felt like hours) he was unarrested and we were asked to please go back into the city and let rush hour resume.

You know it's bad when even the velocops are asking WTF their boss thinks he's doing.

@ascentale @bobjonkman @bikenite #BikeNite A4 about 20 years ago I went on a number of Melbourne's CM rides; at the time I felt there was a venn diagram where there were some people who were pro-cycling, there were some people who were anti-car, and there was some people who just liked a protest

@ascentale @bobjonkman @bikenite

A4. I do remember on CM ride here in Rome where the biggest problem was aggressive people on those big, couch-like Italian scooters, who kept trying to honk through the pack. Someone decided to start circling around the most annoying one, and I joined in as we just went round and round him, to his immense frustration. Luckily, it didn't escalate.

I should add, scooters are often worse than cars here for anti-cycle behaviour.

@ascentale
We've been to a *lot* of critical mass rides around Germany and often helped with corking. Yes, we've had some bad interactions with particularly aggressive drivers (very rarely rising to the level of assault w/ a deadly weapon), but for the most part it's just a big party on wheels.

It took some time to get the coordination with police to work, but it's mostly mutually respectful working together now - thanks in part to support by local politicians.
@bobjonkman @bikenite

@ascentale @bobjonkman @bikenite A4. Not that I was involved in originating, but I went to SF Critical Mass in its earlier days. I stopped participating when it started getting a bit aggro - which was 100% a consequence of how the media covered it (and how cops encouraged the media to cover it), IMO.

This happened with punk as well - if news covers it as "Look at this violent movement" when it's just people having fun in the mosh pit, it attracts jocks who like to get violent. #BikeNite

@ascentale @bobjonkman @bikenite This is not to say that SF CM was overwhelmingly that or even stayed like that. But there was a period there where City of SF and SFPD declared war on CM, where motorists felt empowered to bathe in their road rage, and young white dudes felt it was a place to show up on their bikes to do battle...given that I had to cross the bridge to even get there, these aspects made it less worthwhile to me and more dangerous.

@ascentale @bobjonkman @bikenite I do think Critical Mass is important, I'm glad it survives in many cities, and I hope it continues to spread. I honestly hope we can get one in Tirana, which badly needs it. #BikeNite #Albania
@meganL Just find a couple of friends, create some "Critical Mass Tirana" accounts on social media, announce a place and a time and see what's going to happen. πŸ™‚

@MasseCritiqueToulouse Right now, I have to wait until I have an accessible cycle. I'd say I also have a language/cultural barrier in being a foreigner trying to start something...

But as soon as I can afford to replace my recumbent, I will definitely be trying to build some kind of mass cycling event. #BikeNite

@ascentale @bobjonkman @bikenite A4. I haven’t done many group rides. One time, though, on a solo ride through the local countryside I encountered a group ride. We passed each other three or four times (me passing them when they were stopped 🀣) and had some friendly banter that was fun. I caught it on video, and it’s visible in a ride I created in Rouvy πŸ˜€πŸš΄β€β™€οΈβ€οΈ

@ascentale @bobjonkman @bikenite #BikeNite A4: Just a short note: #Corking at #CriticalMass or similar events seems work with way less friction and conflicts if you're wearing hi-viz clothes all over β€” not just a warning vest. Not because you're better seen, but because it seems to (falsely) pretend authority. πŸ˜‡
@ascentale @bobjonkman @bikenite A4: Ha. The only group-ride-related friction I've suffered here in Japan was during a day trip to Kyoto to meet friends. I arrived early, and when a group passed by I tagged along to burn some time. After about a kilometer and a couple of stops, the American guide leading the group abruptly confronted me about "gloming on" to the group and somehow stealing information from him. πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ
