What have we seen so far today with the so-called "ceasefire" ? 70 more Gazans killed by the genocidal state of Israel. So we met again earlier this evening to bang pots and make a noise.

It's mostly a peaceful demonstration, but today we were visited by a crazy Zionist man who marched up to us, started arguing loudly with one of the women at the demo and and then started to shove another woman. Luckily this was seen by two police who very efficiently told him to get lost.

Weekly demonstration for Palestine by the station in Assen. Yesterday was UN World Children's Day so as well as making a noise we also had a reading of the names of children who have been murdered by Israel. Over the last two years, Israel has killed children in Gaza at an average rate of about one per hour. Over 20000 innocent lives cut short by the genocidal state of Israel. The horrors have not ended and nor have our protests.
From a personal point of view as a citizen of a country in Europe we have limited options, but we can all choose not to buy Israeli goods, not to support companies who trade with Israel and to vote for politicians who seek justice and who do not support Israel.

Two weeks have passed since I posted a photo of the weekly pot-banging demonstration, but that doesn't mean it wasn't happening. Last Thursday, and the Thursday before I was amongst those protesting against the continuing Israeli genocide of Palestinians at the station in Assen. The "ceasefire" hasn't stopped the killing. Hundreds of Palestinians continue to die at the hands of the Israeli army in Gaza and at the hands of the "settlers" in the West Bank.
This must stop.
There's not a lot of that people living in Western nations can do directly, but we can very easily commit to never buying Israeli goods and services, or those from companies linked to Israel, and by voting for politicians who will try to raise the subject internationally.

The conditions under which Gaza's population is heading into winter are inhumane. But not enough people in my country are paying attention to the issue.

Tonight's was the last pot banging demo outside Assen station this year.

I'm hoping for some kind of Christmas miracle so we don't have to return on the 8th of January.

Unfortunately, with the plight of Palestinians having been pushed out of the news there doesn't seem to be much chance of a rapid improvement so I expect we'll be back next year to continue to try to raise awareness.

I went to Groningen today to protest for Gaza. There's a demo every other week between 13:00 and 14:00 in Groningen. These are quiet demos. We hold up signs and a few people hand out information to anyone who is interested.

Many olive trees which Palestinians rely on to make a living have been destroyed by the Israeli occupation so today they were handing out information about Stichting Plant een Olijfboom, who ask people to make a donation which is equivalent in value to planting an olive tree. You can donate a similar amount to what it costs to buy a Christmas tree.

Groningen was full of Christmas shoppers, and there were bands on the streets playing Christmas music. The whole story revolves around locations in Palestine: Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Nazareth etc. That people listen to these stories, while they ignore what's going on on the ground right now in those locations, is something that I find very strange.

The bike ride to Groningen today was a bit on the "fresh" side. It was around 3-4 C and it was quite foggy. This actually made for very pleasant cycling as I was dressed for the weather.
I'm lucky that I live in a country where pretty much everyone can afford proper clothes, has a warm home, and has enough to eat. These are things that we should always be thankful for.

After a two week break, we were supposed to be protesting for Gaza at Assen railway station again today.
No-one else was there.
It's cold and icy. That's presumably why people stayed away.
While a million other things have been in the news since we last met to protest about Israel's disgusting behaviour towards Palestinians, an end to the genocide was not one of them. Israel is instead using the fog of other issues to carry on their genocidal behaviour while people are distracted by the other issues.

Photos from last Thursday and this evening of the weekly protest for Gaza at Assen railway station. Last week we were pot banging, as we do most weeks. This week we listened in silence as names of Palestinians killed by the Israelis were read out.
Each name is read out with the age of the deceased. In one hour we had time only for a small fraction of the dead. There's time to remember only a few hundred out of the tens of thousands who have been killed.
Clearly many people were touched by the message, especially when they heard the names of young children. Many people took leaflets. Hopefully many of them will at the very least be prepared to join the boycott of Israeli goods.

Earlier in the day, Judy and I collected free potting compost from the local council. It's the result of an industrial composting process fed by what people put in the green bins, as well as cuttings of trees and other plants by council workers. This stuff is somewhat smellier than commercial potting compost so we'll only be using it outdoors.

I didn't realise this, never seen it. Might pop down and check. Here, I get the sub contractors to dump all the shredded bushes from along the road for me and I hoover it up at source. That stuff is steaming on the the heap within 24 hours and I get a tonne of it. That forms the basis for the stage one bay when it's freshly loaded and the others are turned.

@MostlyTato @MikeFromLFE @jim_easterbrook @hembrow the Cambridgeshire sites at March and Waterbeach have massive piles of this biodigestate (which they call "soil improver") and you can go there with a trailer and just load up for free. It's a bit stinky, kinda only semi-composted (it'll hot-ferment some more if you fill a compost bay with it), and utterly sterile... but it makes a very good weed-free and weed-suppressing bed topper, or compost ammendment, and is good bulk organic matter for those purposes. I wouldn't grow anything solely in this stuff though.

(They also sell it by the bag at the tip/recycling sites.)

Anyone can just rock up, even in van, and nobody bats an eyelid.

* which is really stupid and annoying, so I need to drive half an hour to get to the third closest site instead. Bureaucratic idiocy.

@wordmark @hembrow used Dundee council compost for a couple of years, including in greenhouse. Plants grew well except cucumbers which succumbed to cucumber wilt (Erwinia soil bacteria). Haven't been able to grow cucumbers in there for a decade or more now.

Problem is everyone, puts diseased plants in their garden waste bin. Between that and pesticide/herbicide residue I think you have to be a bit wary. Flower beds are probably fine, food maybe less so.

Hot compost should kill pathogens but...

Today's protest at Assen station was an emergency action in response to the Israeli introduction of a death sentence for Palestinians only.

We were indoors with placards, and a recording which sounds a lot like the usual public address system in the railway station, but which informs people about the ongoing genocide.

Today's pot-banging protest at Assen railway station. A group of us gathered as we do every Thursday evening from 18:00 until 19:00.

There's very obviously more interest from the public now than there was a few weeks ago. Several people came up and asked for leaflets rather than having to be offered one. Other people walked past doing thumb's up and peace signs with their hands.

Israel has for a long time managed to convince people in the west that they are somehow the victims of their own violence. Their recent war crimes have been so blatant that they have lifted the veils from many people's eyes.

Everyone can now see for themselves who the real terrorist state of the middle east is.

Today's protest in Groningen. This happens on the Waagstraat between 13:00 and 14:00, every other Saturday (odd / oneven week numbers).
It's a quiet demo, not a noisy demo like at the railway station.
If you want to join in you just need to turn up. There are lots of signs that you can borrow if you want to hold one.
Everyone is friendly.
I know that many people feel unable to do anything about the awful situation in Palestine. Protesting and refusing Israeli products are two of the best things that individuals can do.

@hembrow I don’t know how things are there, but I can hardly cycle. Walking is dicey enough on the compacted slush. Even through routes that have some gritting/clearing have interruptions, adjacent to a car road which is entirely clear. Of course a different level of suffering than what would have been protested against, but it puts a damper on anything.
