🧡 1/x

Starting a new thread, featuring my artworks through the years with a technology theme (computers, robots, electronics, …).

Kicking off with a tribute to the 2017 Coda documentary about the Japanese composer Ryuichi Sakamoto.

Made this in 2022. This is how a PC feels to me. πŸ˜‰ Returned to a Mac recently. No more propeller airplane lifting off when I start a 3D rendering. πŸ˜…

Storyboard drawings for cinematic 3D intros of the 1997 Moon Child Windows game.

I also wrote the background story, involving a techno-virus spreading across a planet, ruining nature.

I guess it was already apparent at a young age that I would one day become a game designer. 😁

I used to draw with ballpoint pen on empty pages of my comic books. πŸ™‚

@metin I wonder what prompted these works to be made. Interesting designs you got there
@chengdulittlea Thank you! I made this not long after quitting Facebook because it was already enshittified back in 2018, and annoyed me too much. πŸ™‚
@metin This is so Habbo Hotel coded, I love it
@sky @metin πŸ˜ƒ Thanks. Habbo Hotel, sweet memories. ❀️
@metin Zombie? This looks like a typical gamer with a focused demeanour and an indoor tan πŸ˜‚
@metin That's really cool! 😲 The technical details, particularly the antennas, are amazing! How old were you when you drew this?

@daniel Thank you! I think I was around six years old, maybe seven.

I look at the drawing with melancholy, because at that age, a kid simply draws to have fun and tell a simple story. I wasn't trying to create correct or beautiful drawings. Later, things like insecurity and perfectionism get in the way of spontaneity.

@metin I completely understand what you mean. But the drawings are even more impressive when you consider how young you were when you did them. Your artistic talent was evident from an early age πŸ‘

I also remember drawing robots at around that age, or maybe a little later. I don't think I still have them, but they were really silly and badly done. I don't recall ever drawing landscapes or stories, only isolated objects similar to schematics. When I was younger, I wanted to become an inventor when I grew up πŸ˜‚

@daniel Thanks a lot Daniel. You make me blush. 😊

I’ve always loved reading comics from a very young age, and the comics inspired me to draw. I loved telling silly little stories in chaotic worlds, often depicting a hectic, caricatural war scene, as if war was a harmless game. πŸ˜…

I also remember drawing fake screenshots of early video games I would love to have. Making drawings of something I desired or admired felt like owning it a little bit. πŸ™‚

@metin Haha, that's really cool! The comics I read as a kid, mainly Clever & Smart (I don't know how famous this series is outside Germany), also inspired my early work. That's why I created my own comic character and drew silly slapstick comics featuring it πŸ˜‚ Though I only finished one short story.

I also had a different perception of war and violence as a kid, or rather, I didn't think about it much. This was probably due to my childish naivety, and also because they were more normalised and omnipresent in the media back then.

@daniel @metin Cool, I also loved Clever & Smart! Over here in the Netherlands they were called Paling & Ko. 😁

And indeed, as a kid you play war games with your friends, and you get toy guns, which is pretty weird if you think of it. Adults designing, producing and selling murder weapons as toys for kids. No wonder the world still has many hostile areas.

@metin Nice! Paling & Ko sounds cool, too!

I agree. Although there is more awareness of such things nowadays, toy weapons are still sold in shops, and many people still buy them. But that's probably largely due to US influence?

@metin I love it!!! As a teenager, I would find sketches from my dad in his books, comic books, and... vinyl records 🀩
@metin Looking at the piece in the centre right in particular, I could quite easily imagine this in a 3D game! I love the nature vs industry theme, which was also present in Hoi πŸ‘
@metin That's you when you got your VR headset earlier this year πŸ˜‚
@daniel Hahaha. 😁 I sold my Quest again, to have budget for a Mac, but I miss VR, and will definitely return to it when a new opportunity arises.

@metin Ah, I did not know that. I wondered if you had lost interest in VR. In my experience (from 10 years ago), VR loses its magic quite quickly πŸ˜…

I'm currently thinking about building my own 3DOF VR headset (with no motion tracking). It's actually quite simple, and it sounds like a cool project. But we'll see 😏

@daniel Wow, that's really cool, building your own headset. I hope you will post how the project goes. I will gladly boost that.

Interestingly, VR didn't bore me. I kept enjoying the immersive 3D videos and the workout-type / music-oriented games, like Synth Riders. The only things that bothered me were Meta, and the relatively clumsy, heavy headset. VR has almost matured, but not completely yet.

@metin For now, it's just an idea. But I'll share the results when I have them!

One of the issues I had with old VR headsets was also their weight. I had the PSVR back then, which relied on lots of thick cables. But worse was the eventual motion sickness. I'm not prone to motion sickness, but I started to feel it after about 45 minutes. Perhaps that's less of an issue with modern headsets that support higher resolutions, but it always made me view VR as more of a short-term experience than the future of digital media and gaming. Nevertheless, I still find them fascinating!

@daniel Yeah, the motion sickness is still an issue on modern headsets, but the recent pancake lenses make a difference.

Nevertheless, I still felt the motion sickness on the Quest 3 when moving / turning in a smooth fashion, and when the horizon tilts, like in a flight sim.

@metin That icon should be default for any Commodore 64 emulator
@metin these are good! SdfModeler is not that convenient in terms of UI interaction... I get bored try to manipulate the placement of stuff lol

@chengdulittlea πŸ˜ƒ Personally, I find SDF Modeler quite straightforward. You do know there's position and normal snapping?

Here's a Quick-Start guide / manual with all details:

@metin ah the blender sdf plugin :D yep that is then much better 🀣 the standalone sdf program is not that easy to use πŸ˜…
@chengdulittlea Haha, no, this is my manual for SDF Modeler, not for a Blender add-on. 😁 Although ConjureSDF is quite potent, but its development is very slow, and the latest version is feature-limited.
@metin :O wow damn I'll have to check πŸ”₯
