Trying a little experiment. I will crowd source the various instruments for my next track. Doing some #electronic #music this month to warm up for #jamuary , so let's start with drums. What drum machine should I use?
With the first part concluded, let's bring one more element to the mix. I'll add one from each of the synth polls that didn't get selected plus one extra. I'll use that last winner for fill, layer or sfx depending which one wins this round. Which one do you choose?
I'll then start wiring everything together probably on Sunday. #synth #studio #music
So in the end I'm making some #electronic #music with the following drum machine #drummachine:
Roland CR78
And the following #synths:
Roland D50
Roland JX3P
Solina String Ensemble
Yamaha PSS680 musicstation
And I'm adding so far the following effects #fx #pedals:
walrus audio sloer
Boss sl20
Boss compressor
Mutron octave divider
Red panda particle
Behringer ultra octaver
Mixed on a Boss BX16
And arpegiator
Basically, a typical kit I'd use live (except I would use a lot more drum machines)
Had to add a shelf to the top tier of my rack to hold my CR78, Solina, pedals etc.
The cr78 is super for live performance, with the variations, fade in and fade out and In/Out sync. It is also programmable (although super challenging) and has Voice mute buttons and you can combine preset rhythms together.
Famously used by Phil Collins, OMD and Visage to name a few
The programming was done through the WS1 interface. Sadly, in over 30 years of ownership of my CR78, I never found one (at a price I was willing to pay) and instead used a normally closed footswitch. Not only can you program beats in slots I to IV but in play mode, you can play live one of the sound, along with any of the presets.
Here you can see a Boss FS5U, and how to set it up (note polarity switch)
Everything put together, set the mood. Sunday I just did an initial selection of complementary sounds so they didn't stomp too much on each other. Programmed some drum patterns, set up the arpeggiator. Tested to tape, didn't like the mix, but gave me some good ideas. I will probably multitrack next month so I can redo one specific track instead of having to redo the whole thing.
And Monday night I did some adjustments and final take #studio #music #electronic #midi #live #tape
Track starts at 60bpm, with the CR78 kick and snare (separate output) playing call and response and the PSS680 accompanying with the D50 chiming in while the whole thing ramps up toward 120bpm. Bassline and string pads come in. I skip a bar here and there and add to the drums, tweak the mix etc. Only 2 hands so it is overall simple but doesn't get you bored. Concludes with a slow down. #electronic #music #live

A crowdsource experiment. The instruments were voted for drums, bass, synth, pad, sfx/extra on Mastodon. The results were: Roland CR-78 for drum machine Roland JX3P (substituted at the last minute fo
