The opposite of schadenfreude is
mudita, a Buddhist term for sympathetic or vicarious joy. It's the joy you feel when someone else succeeds

I could use a little mudita today. What do you have for me, fediverse? Hit me with your successes, the more mundane the better (but I'm all for hearing about your big wins, too)

@kims I finally got my rotten front steps replaced today! And yesterday, I finally got my garage door fixed! Fixing all the things.

@jamesmarshall
Fixing all the things!

[Many years back, a young relative was old enough to know that I loved Allie Brosh, but not old enough to know that it was Not Okay to upload other people's images to have them made into t-shirts, hats, bags, etc

I sent Allie Brosh a check which she never cashed]

Anyway, the shower curtain in our guest bathroom:

#mudita

@kims sweet shower curtain! And poignant.
@kims Mudita is all around me right now, as my spouse got a promotion! It's a long time coming, and I'm super happy for her.

@portlandy
This is a weird one for me. I met my spouse late in his career when he looked forward to *less* responsibility at work, rather than more

But promotions that make your family happy make me happy. Congrats to you and yours

#mudita

@kims
I believe it! I took a pay cut two years ago so I could have a better work experience. But in my spouse's case, the promotion is really just a recognition that they've been underpaying her for all the extra work she's been taking on.
@portlandy @kims nice that she got that, many people get conned into burnout by promises of promotions or pay rises that never materialise.
@econads we've both been fortunate to be able to be selective about our employers (after many years of not)
@portlandy I took a pay cut for a less toxic employer some years ago as well. Sometimes I'm resentful about how much my other half earns compared to me (same company, Union contract, he stayed) but I'm sure that if I was still there I'd already have given up like a lot of my ex colleagues and be living for the weekend.
@kims
Just finished a batch of pumpkin chocolate chip cookies, from a recipe my mom shared, and they came out *perfect*! Huge relief after the wet mess that was the previous batch, from a recipe I found online. I will be sharing these with friends that were at the pumpkin carving party where I collected the pumpkin bits that went into the homemade puree!

@chronohart
Being able to successfully replicate a recipe from mom is one of those milestones one never forgets

To this day I wish I could make a tian even half as good as mom's

#mudita

@chronohart @kims

Congratulations! (You probably don't want to share the recipe but in case you do, I have had similar choc chip pumpkin cookie disasters.)

@vervain @kims
I'm more than happy to share! It'll take a bit of time, though, since I haven't transcribed it from photo to text yet.

@chronohart @vervain @kims you could put the photo into Google translate and then just copy the text instead of translating it? Assuming it doesn't have anything you would care about having in the cloud in it.

I do feel a little dirty recommending Google for anything but that's what came to mind.

@chronohart @vervain @kims actually cooked.wiki lets you upload a photo and it'll transcribe it.

Edit: sorry, I see I'm late. Never mind :-)

@chronohart
Oh my gosh, super fast!! Thank you so much. I'm excited to make a batch. I'll let you know how it turns out.

@kims

@kims After almost two weeks and about 80 different concept sketches we finally nailed a client logo design today. Felt great.

@gedeonm
The speechwriter in me knows the unmatched joy of *knowing* you've nailed it (even before the client signs off)

Congrats

#mudita

@kims I think my TODO tracker is ready to upload to my sandstorm server tonight.

Feeling pretty good about it; haven't prototyped something just for myself in a while.

@mark
That's often the most satisfying person to do things for. Well todone!

#mudita

I got a new bike!

@kims

@dogfox
Okay, I don't know what a grandma bike is (I'd have assumed a basket on the handlebars for a small dog, rather than a rattrap on the back) but now I'm itching to ride a bike

[I think I just dated myself calling it a rattrap]

#mudita

A "Grandma Bike" is what the dutch call one of those step-through things with the fenders and the chain guard and everything!

@kims

@kims @dogfox never heard rattrap before but it's a good description! If it's old maybe we need to resurrect it.
@dogfox @kims that is a nice bike. Very slinky.
@kims I figured out how to get chrome to use the dnsmasq DNS I set up for my computer rather than its own DNS.

@poleguy
This is where I have to admit I don't know source code from bar code <tm Clay Shirky circa 1994> but it sounds joy-worthy

#mudita

@kims
Well, if you ever need some dorky computer stuff handled for you, just ask mastodon. We're here. :-)

I had to look that quote up, and it was hard to even find a reference. shirky.com has not been renewed.

I don't know Clay Shirky.

And I guess I'm not confident I know what "bar code" is either in that context. That's just a reference to the bar codes used for UPC codes on products you scan at the grocery store, right?

@kims I finally took the time to see a doctor for menopausal HRT.

Here's hoping I'll be a little more like myself in a few months, because even I'm tired of this forgetful, frigid bitch.

@DrSaucy
I did the patch on either side of my belly button (swapping sides from week to week, as I recall) back in 2017 for about a year

It definitely helped!

#mudita

@kims

Took 19 gallons of trash off the beach this afternoon and found a real BIG pretty agate! Usually only find one this size and quality once a year. Made for a good day. Yeah, trash and rocks - hows that for mundane?

@CoastalCoasting
<me picturing 19 1-galllon garbage bins stuffed with trash>

Whoa that's a lot! You deserve all the pretty agates!

#mudita

@CoastalCoasting @kims that was a worthwhile day.
@kims this post made my day, ty! I’ll share too! Just got off a Signal chat with a group that hopes to promote the use of Free Software and it was so inspiring.
@kims
I shoveled my driveway. Doesn't sound like much, I know. But I broke my arm in September, was in a cast until Halloween, and have been struggling ever since to do stuff without every move hurting. I was starting to resign myself to accepting my loss of function, but sucessfully clearing that snow today without pain was a victory, and a sign that things are going to get better!

@CommonSparrow
I've been doing PT for adhesive capsulitis for a few months now. Had to rearrange the kitchen cabinets so that I could reach my favorite bowls

Getting mobility back is a big goal right now, so all the congrats on driveway snow removal

#mudita

@kims
Here's to more mobility! Wishing you the best!

@kims My migraine is ending.

If that’s not exactly what you were hoping for as a response, it snowed outside recently, too, and I love snow.

@lydiaschoch
I was a migraine sufferer from my teens until I hit menopause, at which point they just... disappeared. I definitely don't miss keeping an imitrex pen on hand

Relief from pain is whole other kind of joy that's well worth celebrating. But also... snow!

#mudita

@lydiaschoch @kims

Migraine ending ... yay! What a relief.
Snow is nice too but ... no migraine! This is great!

I've had headaches as bad as migraines. It's such a relief when they stop.

@kims

My band reunited after 25 years and have completed an LP that is going to mastering. Getting this done was tough!

@serpicojam
Maintaining relationships over a quarter century is a thing to be celebrated. Making art with those people? Priceless

#mudita

I did a sketch and decided I like it as a sketch, instead of trying to develop it further. That takes self control! Here it is, Self Portrait with Jacko, based on a photo my husband took. Drawn freehand, Apple Pencil between my arthritic knuckles, on my iPad Pro, using the Sketch Club app. Spent about an hour total on it. #digitalart #ipadart #artapp #drawingapp
@kims Just tried writing dialogue for the first time in decades and really enjoyed it.

@aarbrk
Dialogue is hard, but it's such a thrill when it lands (and even when it doesn't)

It's great to pick up an art, any art, after years of letting it lay dormant. Good for you

#mudita

@kims i went roller skating and only fell a couple times!

it's really vulnerable for me to be bad at something in front of others, so i'm very proud that i put myself out there

@wintersouls
Being vulnerable requires such bravery. If it's not too weird for me to say, I'm proud of you, too

#mudita

@kims not too weird at all! thank you so much 💛
@kims I solved a very frustrating networking problem at work, and also convinced my cat to nap on the chair next to me instead of constantly trying to climb on my laptop! Warm fuzzy feelings
