Transport Victoria are expanding tram stops on the 57 tram line along Victoria St, Errol St and Queensberry St in North Melbourne and as a big fuck you to the disability community they're not making them accessible.

They're making the tram stops wider and adding zebra crossings but for some reason they can't be fucked rising the stop to the level of the tram to provide level boarding.

This is fucking outrageous.

Transport Victoria needed to make all tram stops accessible by 2022 and they failed to do that. The next deadline is only a few years away and they're planning to rebuild trams stops without making them accessible.

If you're in Melbourne please submit feedback on this consultation and tell them you support accessible tram stops.

You can also email Sonya Kilkenny the Minister for Planning and tell them you support accessible tram stops.

They are also doing in person consultations on Saturday and Tuesday if you want to yell at them in person.

At the Sydney rd Accessible Tram Stops rally today in Coburg. A good turnout in the rain. We handed out leaflets and talked to people about the problem of accessible transport for people when the Upfield line is closed for level crossing removals in 2028.

I went down to the consultation about the changes to the tram stops on the 57 tram and the people there were pretty clear that the reason these tram stops aren't going to be accessible is the budget they've been given.
Essentially the government wants to do the minimum to be able to run the new longer G-class trams and doesn't care about making stops accessible.
@jessta how do we take the state govt to court to enforce accessibility standards?

@benschwarz I've no idea. I assume it's more complicated than that otherwise one of the peak bodies would have done it by now.

It's a federal law and a state responsibility so you can hassle all levels of government about it.

@jessta I suppose it's better than the 92... accessible stops, but randomly run non-accessible trams 😖
@jessta It’s stupid. They’re also trying to keep Errol St open as a two way thoroughfare and this is the perfect opportunity to make it one way, and thus make space for accessible stops.

@jessta @sortius it’s 2025 and we’re looking over who benefits from accessibility “accommodations”.

The simple fucking fact is that we all fucking do.

Broken your leg? Raised platforms help.

Dodgy eyesight? Clear audio announcements, service signage and basic fucking signage on the ground helps.

Bringing home the shopping or carrying a baby? Less height difference reduce fall hazards.

Why is this ever considered an “us vs them” equation on cost? We are all “them”.
