This photo does not come close to capturing how beautiful this brocade silk is.

The green jacquard is going to become a fancy dress vest. The cream paisley is going to become a set of stays.

And the tan habotai is for linings.

I'm so excited and also nervous.

Pieces are cut. Now to decide if I want to chance winging a welt pocket...

I *do* desperately want a welt pocket in the vest. It's just if I'm gonna fuck it all up if I do.

*flails*

Gonna cut the pieces out for it, and the interfacing. Then have a cuppa to fortify myself.

I do want welt pockets...

But I am feeling lazy. I think that's what is going on here. I've had a lot of pain all week and it's sucking all my energy.

It's one of those cases where I'm going to regret it if I don't. This vest deserves all the Extra

After all that, working with this fabric to sew the princess seams together has convinced me that it's just too delicate a silk to bear the weight of a welt pocket and a pocketwatch.

Still gonna be gorgeous tho.

This means ofc that I'm gonna need to find a nice tweed or corduroy or something to make ANOTHER vest out of for a pocketwach

OKAY BUT WHAT IF... just decorative? For the โœจ vibes โœจ

Part of me feels like the front of the vest will look incomplete without the detail that a welt pocket or two will bring.

I think the fact that I still really want to do it means I should do it.

Okay I've had a cuppa and a thinky think. Gonna finish the vest and then if I think it needs a lil something something I'm going to add a faux pocket flap. Given it won't be a functional pocket anyways, no harm done.

Thank you for coming along on this journey lolol

@MsHearthWitch is there a way to make the lining bear the weight of the pocket?

@infryq No lining for this vest. Just generous facings.

The pocket WILL go right on a princess seam so I'm wondering if tacking it to the seam might help?

@MsHearthWitch
If you've recently and successfully made another waistcoat with welt pockets, then go ahead and cut out the good fabric. If not, forego the pockets and preserve the fabric.
At least, that's my approach to new skills and "good" fabrics. I'm fearless when working with thrifted fabrics!
@EllenInEdmonton I have made them before but not on a waistcoast. My method is pretty simple.
@MsHearthWitch I have recently put double welt pockets on a waistcoat, although made from cheap material. I think I would be nervous with fabric like this but I totally get that you'd want them here. Maybe you could have a practice go if you have any spare fabric? That's what I did.
@MsHearthWitch This is going to be brilliant!
@elfkin I hope so! Not sure if the buttons I ordered will arrive in time and I'm uncertain what to do if they don't.
@MsHearthWitch Could you do knotted cord knobby button things like one would make for a frog closure?

@elfkin Not sure if that would ruin the fancy look I'm going for.

I might just sew on other buttons and not actually do the button holes. Just for the event. We'll see.
