If you're pissed off with what #Duolingo has done with "energy" and you're looking for an alternative way of learning #French does #Askfedi have any advice?
@Guy what do you want to learn French for? Reading, traveling, work, family?
@tg9541
To keep my brain going and for (hopefully) future travel opportunities.
@Guy fwiw, I learned some French at school. What I did later to build vocabulary and listening skills was listening to radio shows, mostly "cultural" from RBTF, sometimes from RFI. I also read quality papers, e.g. Le Monde, and sometimes I read a book. Colloquial French is almost a language in its own right. Watching movies, serials, or even cartoons may help to fill the gaps.
@Guy LingoDeer reminds me of what Duolingo used to be like, but I haven't used it very much yet.
@Guy I have been using uTalk to learn Cornish. You can set the interface language as well as the target language so mine is set to Cymraeg. Although 'further' modules are chargeable you can earn enough credit from the free lessons- well, so far anyway.

@Guy I've been using Babbel for Italian and feel it is much better than Duolingo ever was.

Look out for the (frequent) sales though, as the full price is quite steep.

@Guy I was trying to do duolingo french for "being ready" and, well, turns out the real spoken language is completely disconnected from what's taught (and also what's written normally in books!). In the end, french online radios helped most.

@Guy
I started with Frantastique but it was limited, I reached the end. Try Le Journal en Français Facile savoirs.rfi.fr

I have to translate standard English into Duolingo American and back.

@Guy Maybe https://github.com/tkrajina/10000sentences which is open source but their might be better alternatives currently

@Guy I mostly read books, but I've also been using this page a little bit from time to time. (It's all in French though, so I'd say one needs to have at least a little basic knowledge.)

@nordpirat
This looks really interesting. I just need something to move me on while I figure out where I want to get to with my french experiment.

It started out as a purely academic challenge to keep my brain stimulated but I've got to the stage of actually enjoying the learning process.
