@kurtsh Not quite the same level, but running for student government long ago, my opponent only said the words “I play football” during our student body presentations. They won.

(Also, someone pulled the fire alarm, shortly into my own speech.)

In college, I watched the special treatment of athletes as well. I’m guessing it’s even more special today now that they can earn likeness money.

Idol worship of athletes by mortal lemmings has been rampant for decades.

I roomed with a 3rd string RB for our college football team. Genuinely a good guy but I could tell you stories about how he & his teammates walked like gods among men. Rules were bent or simply didn't apply to them.

My friend was the math tutor for a future NBA basketball player on our team who told him, "Just do the homework: I'm going to the NBA & will never use any of this."

(Admittedly, I was the beneficiary of proximity to these gods, sometimes, in part because I'd lend them my computer for term papers & games. I was pretty cash strapped so 4 of the players would walk me into the athlete's 'training table' to eat meals & told security that "the Asian guy" was a new walk-on kicker & they never questioned it. I survived on many protein drinks & bars I smuggled home under my sweatshirt.)
