This is something I made because it's a t-shirt I've wanted for a while but in the unlikely event anyone else is interested here you go https://www.redbubble.com/shop/ap/176268093
@babe fun (?) fact! In Dutch we have one word for dove and pigeon. So honestly I've never understood the whole debate.
@bebatjof I've always just called them fancy pigeons. It always surprised me to find there are people who have very strong opinions about them being separate
@bebatjof @babe I genuinely thought they were just variations of the same species 🫣 Probably largely because of the Dutch translation πŸ˜…

@bumblebeedc @bebatjof They're all members of columbidae and the distinction is largely one of language and perception

A lot of what's classed as a pigeon and what's a dove comes down to cultural perception, what they look like, and ultimately just vibes.
Feel like it looks a bit scruffy? Pigeon. Looks elegant? Dove.

@bumblebeedc @bebatjof But in terms of english and the way it evolved, technically all pigeons are doves
@babe @bebatjof interesting! I went and looked up the difference after seeing your posts, which is where I find the whole columbiae bit. But this is another new thing I learned today, thanks.
Also, I love the design you made! 😁
@bumblebeedc @babe yeah I also just thought they're the same bird, just a different colour. As if orange cats would have their own name. Lol.
@babe
In the immortal words of Aesop Rock:
"A dove is just a pigeon, you motherfuckers is bigots."
@babe pigeons are in the zeitgeist rn according to me and @0x00string and maybe no one else
@babe
I've always thought of pigeons as bougie doves. Especially the fancy ones
@babe I think when English has a (Norman) French-derived and a Germanic word for the same thing the French one is usually "fancier". Do you know why pigeon/dove are the other way round?
@bwh Can't say that I do!
