Washington state’s governor is declaring an emergency to ensure adequate fuel is delivered to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport after a leak shut down a major fuel pipeline. Gov. Bob Ferguson's office says the order temporarily waives and suspends state regulations limiting the number of hours commercial vehicle operators can drive when transporting fuel. The governor says the order also ensures safe-driving measures are in place. The Olympic Pipeline has been shut down since routine maintenance revealed a leak last week. Operator BP Pipelines North America notified the state and is working with state and federal agencies on containment, cleanup and repair.

At first I wondered why there wasn't also an emergency declared in western Oregon because of the Olympic pipeline shutdown. An online search found that Oregon has switched much of its fuel supply to rail but can also receive it by barge. So Portland Airport #KPDX and the rest of western Oregon (west of the Cascades) have alternate sources. East of the Cascades are mainly by rail and truck like most rural areas. #aviation #travel #avgeek

Seattle Airport & Port of Seattle have no plans for redundant fuel supply. In a 2025 update of the airport master plan, they mention concern of "supply disruptions" but dismiss it as outside the airport, translated "not my job". The master plan will be up for WA state public input in early 2026. Oregon has joined Washington in declaring a fuel emergency over the #OlympicPipelineShutdown.
