Sometimes you can't immediately tell that someone is disabled. Sometimes you may not grasp why an accommodation is being asked for. Newsflash! It doesn't matter if you get it or understand why. Just be kind. Don't be a jerk. Please.
@bugwhisperer Captions Off is really one of those only if unanimous type of settings.
@hellomiakoda yes, it really should be! πŸ’―
@hellomiakoda unfortunately it is usually the loudest that dictate decisions. If a disabled person speaks up or gets defensive we're called emotional, needy, faking it. ugh....
@bugwhisperer @hellomiakoda my personal favorite is when the group calls for a vote on whether we should have an accommodation or not. (this happened at a workplace once when I asked for an accommodation around my sound processing disorder; and the majority won, of course.)
@hellomiakoda @nicole oof! that's a hard one, because it's always claimed "well it was a fair vote" like.... this isn't something ya supposed to vote on folks.
@bugwhisperer @nicole It can be a fair vote if only one side means only some people have no access
@bugwhisperer @hellomiakoda @nicole That is fucked up! I'm so glad to live in a place that requires business to give reasonable adjustment to those with disabilities. If they for instance told me I couldn't wear my noise cancelling headphones at work I'm confident I'd come out on top.

Hope you are in better place now!
@bugwhisperer I deeply appreciate when others in the group educate folks instead of placing it on the disabled person. at a friend’s movie night, he had captions on, and when one of the other people there complained (a child, so more understandable) it was used as a teaching moment to explain that captions are necessary for some people and we would be leaving them on. the dread that had welled up in me melted away from that expression of care and love.
@nicole ahhh, yaas. that's is really the best way to do it. such a great story and example of how it ought to be done. thanks for sharing that!
