Was würde so ein Display dann überhaupt kosten?

»The Framework 12 still feels overpriced [...] as a Windows 11 device but as a fully supported Linux 2-in-1 [...] I'm almost ready to say it's worth the extra money, especially for someone new to Linux. If you can get past the shortcomings [...]. And honestly, there just aren't many true convertible competitors in the Linux space.« Lifting Linux

Prompt klingelt mein Handy. »FedEx hier, aber du nicht 💔«

Side by side to my ThinkPad it actually doesn't feel like such a compromise. And it definitely has character :3

First, some issues to tackle: My trackpad was misaligned, I thought I did something wrong when I assembled my machine. Bf disassembled, reassembled and properly aligned the trackpad. Now it works fine.

Next up, we're trying to remap the ⚙️-key to F13, so it is more useful. It was a bit hard to track down the proper documentation for framework_tool, but my boyfriend dug through the commits and found something: https://github.com/FrameworkComputer/framework-system/pull/183/commits/f3560af71e476680ee234677bc125d4972b74f87

I was really impressed by how many things »just worked«. Some things I needed to tweak with GNOME extensions.

Display: you notice the reds being orange with the naked eye. But I like the display otherwise. Touchscreen works just fine, still waiting to order the colour-matched stylus.

Keyboard: I like how the key caps feel, travel is fine. You can swap Fn and left-ctrl in BIOS, but I'm trying to just get used to how it is, so it doesn't confuse other people using my laptop.

Trackpad: after realignment, I'm really impressed. I haven't used many modern non-apple trackpads, but this one gets really close to the diveboard-style trackpads found in older Macbooks, while not being made out of glass (from what I've heard).

As a follow up: I noticed some cracks too unfortunately. Already contacted support.

Content warning: framework 12 cracking case update

Chitter

#Framework are sending me a new part but I'll have to wait a few weeks because they want to make sure the replacement won't just crack again after a while, fair enough.

In the meantime, they apparently started selling the stylus tonight. It was announced to come out in Q3 which ends today, so they didn't miss that deadline. 😂

Unfortunately, I didn't get an email (pretty sure I signed up for notifications, but I also didn't receive a confirmation when I signed up again to be sure) and they are already sold out again.

I was waiting for the stylus to order more expansion cards but I've now opted for a dongle that has all the ports I wanted instead. That way I still have enough USB-C ports left.

The replacement bottom cover arrived more than a week ago but I'm unsure if I want to replace it right away. Apparently it is a more involved procedure. https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Framework+Laptop+12+Bottom+Cover+Replacement/186623

I'm not happy with how the Framework CEO handled that other situation (https://community.frame.work/t/framework-supporting-far-right-racists/75986) but I ordered the stylus anyway when it was back in stock. I was a bit annoyed by the extra 12€ for shipping, because I would've ordered it together with the laptop if it would've been available back then. But I could've picked another stylus if it bothered me enough.

Recently, when playing Olli Olli World while sharing the screen via Discord, I brought the i5 to its limits after a while. When thermal throttling kicked in, I was at 7 fps (down from around 30 before). Casual games, with just an audio call in the background are fine. I like using it in tent mode with a PS4 controller. I'm curious how performance compares to something like the Steam Deck.
I don't expect the laptop to be a high performer, so I don't really throw big tasks at it. This was the first time I've run into a wall. Take it as anecdotal evidence. I don't really want to benchmark this thing. (If I find some nice benchmarks, maybe I'll link them here in the future.)

About the missing fingerprint reader:
I got used to typing my password again quickly, but when someone prototyped an extension card (https://community.frame.work/t/fingerprint-reader-expansion-card-for-fw12/76798) I got curious and sent my boyfriend to the task. Unfortunately the documentation is missing steps and he couldn't replicate the results easily.
I wound up with just using the fingerprint reader with an adapter (USB A expansion card ordered with the stylus).
But the forum thread was shared by the CEO, so I'm curious if there'll be an official expansion card or if that means »if you really need a fingerprint reader just DIY«. I assume it's the latter.
