Seattle Voice Lab has broken their silence over a former employee of theirs (Jimmy Chen), who set up his own voice coaching service called Trans Voice Lab.

We need to address Trans Voice Lab.

We highly recommend watching / listening to the whole video, but here are some key points within their video:

  • Jimmy's employment was terminated for "manipulative teaching practices and dishonesty towards" their students.
  • He downloaded their bespoke training materials (SVL's intellectual property) and client lists (!!!), then used these to set up his own voice coaching service and write a book.
  • SVL didn't want to have to make the video, but has felt obliged to do so.
  • SVL is pursuing "legal counsel" over Jimmy's actions.

tl;dr

  • Avoid any videos or guides from Jimmy Chen.
  • Avoid using Trans Voice Lab at all costs.

@SleepyCatten had a family member send me these courses because they saw them on that weird short video site. I saw the prices and recoiled and then wondered why the name seemed so suspiciously similar. Now I know.

@m It's not drama. It's manipulation. We've been getting scammed by him for a year and a half. He tells you you're doing poorly and then doesn't actually help you get better. He can keep you on his leash longer that way.

He just sells the illusion of helping and markets himself. It's 100% a grift.

@m You can do that if you really want to, but you should watch the full video first. It doesn't seem like you've grasped the full extent of what he's done and what he's like.

If all that matters to you is whether his courses are better, then don't go with him, as his courses are just tweaked versions of SVL's material, plus he's got far less experience and talent, and is an arsehole to students.

@[email protected] We were being actively scammed by him for a very long time when this news broke. It's taking days to properly process it. This manipulative asshole got a lot of money from us by dragging her along for so long. She started with SVL, then after only three weeks, he told my partner she “wasn't making enough progress” and that they needed to do one on one classes. A year and a half later, here we are, and with still little to show for it besides thousands of dollars gone. We didn't even know he was fired until a couple nights ago when SVL made the video. Money's already a problem for us and the way he preyed on her just ... I'm still ridiculously angry.

@SleepyCatten minor note on presentation just not to repeat or emphasize the name of the copycat in the title. instead focus on the organization whose identity is being abused and people who are interested will read more. this just helps to put the visibility where we want it which is on the organizations doing what we support, not on those who take advantage.
