👀What’s new this year? This is the first COP after the International Court of Justice released its historic advisory opinion on climate. The ICJ clarified that governments have a legal duty to phase out fossil fuels & to effectively prevent climate harm - a central topic at the global climate talks.

States said that the UNFCCC is a space for collaboration, not litigation. This is one of the many reasons the #ICJAO on climate applies perfectly. The ICJ clarifies what collaboration requires, so one good way to avoid litigation is to fulfil your duties.

At #COP29, the rules for #Article6o4 (Paris Agreement Crediting Mechanism) were largely finalized. But as COP30 got underway, some States, using the carbon market promoters’ own words, are trying to weaken rules to make them less aligned with science and more aligned with profit.

Meanwhile, Brazil has proposed a new “Open Coalition” to integrate & harmonize #CarbonMarkets globally—which promises interoperability, ‘high-integrity’ credits & cost-effectiveness—but offers no guarantees that emissions will fall or polluters stop expanding. Not real ambition!
