@GregCocks Names like Elk Creek are usually short for "Creek where John shot that elk", right?
@kbob many geographic names are like that: Mill Creek where they use a stream to drive a mill wheel, Cottonwood Creek where there were/are lots of cottonwood trees, Bear Creek, Dry Creek, Rock Creek, Indian, Cedar, Willow, etc, etc - i.e., most of the "Top 20" and onwards...
(same with most of people's surnames from English, related to their jobs/trades...)
