The day at #COP30 began with a peaceful protest from the Munduruku peoples of the Brazilian Amazon calling for climate justice & their right to be heard inside the negotiations room. ✊ #IndigenousPeoples need to be heard ✊ 👉 www.theguardian.com/environment/... A thread 🧵
⁉️ Why this matter⁉️ #IndigenousPeoples are the custodians of many of the planet’s remaining intact ecosystems. They live in direct relationship with the lands they protect, and increasingly those lands are under threat.
From agribusiness to oil exploitation to illegal mining and logging, Indigenous territories are targeted for resource extraction that not only undermines climate goals, but actively displaces the communities best positioned to safeguard them 😱. #IndigenousPeoples #DefendTheDefenders
And while Indigenous Peoples have long been central to environmental protection - and in ensuring everyone’s enjoyment of the right to a #HealthyEnvironmentForAll –, their rights and voices have rarely held equal weight in political negotiations 🗣️🪑. apnews.com/article/unit...

Indigenous groups get the spotlight at UN climate talks

This year's United Nations climate talks in Brazil are putting a special focus on Indigenous peoples. It's one reason the country decided to hold the event in Belem, on the doorstep of the Amazon rainforest. But some Indigenous groups question whether being visible translates into real power. One attendee said Indigenous groups are working within an institution not built for them and they have to work “10 times harder” to be heard. Indigenous peoples safeguard much of the world’s biodiversity and are among those who contribute the least to climate change. But they’re disproportionately harmed by the devastation it causes.
