Mum on guard. Going to get sunny today, but 31 tomorrow, which will be way worse for them. These guys love cold weather.

It's predicted to get to 31 today, hopefully they can find enough shade to hide in.

Dinner's arrived. Babies show no sign of going back to the original nest as yet.

Two babies have managed to get into the far nest, where they can get some shade from the sun.

One baby still can't climb up into the nest so their other siblings are just staying with it for now.

Breakfast time. First the two in the nest got food, then the third one. It's been confirmed there are two girls and one boy, so maybe the boy's the one who can't climb up yet as he's a bit smaller.

White fluff starting to come off, you can see a hint of dark feathers on the wing tips now.

Sometimes all three babies hang on the ledge, other times two still climb into the nest. Third sticks to the ledge.

Still in the toddler stage of sticking close. They'll be teens soon and wanting distance from their siblings.

Mate, I don't think mum's bringing you food any more. And once you finish nibbling on the leftovers there, you're going to have to move out.

@VWDasher uh, oh. I hope it realizes this quickly.
@SnowyCA Oh they do eventually! I think this is the last born, so was a day or two behind his sisters. Just a little behind in development. Will probably leave the nest today or tomorrow. Mum will be doing flybys too, with food, to lure him out.
@VWDasher
I wasn't aware the mom would do flybys with food. Very interesting, and nice to know they don't simply abandon the youngsters.
Thanks. : )
@SnowyCA Oh both parents are out there, flying around and trying to tempt the kids into flying! They can be seen from the ground but they are pretty high up. People do do the occasional spottings in the city of them. Parents are still very close, checking on them, at this stage.

@VWDasher
They are wonderful parents.

Do birds often nest in that building?

@SnowyCA just these guys! They've been doing this since the nineties as far as I know. Crazy buggers.
@VWDasher
Since the nineties? Really?😮 Amazing!
@SnowyCA @VWDasher Same window ledge, same time of the year, every year.
Seems that Peregrine Falcons can adapt incredibly well to the city environment. I imagine it's like they've setup on a cliff with a good up-draught and some shelter from the weather, and nearby there's a river and plentiful food (mostly pigeons?) for them to hunt.
Conveniently, now there's a nesting box and a couple of live webcams to show different angles: https://youtube.com/@367collinsfalcons4

@DamienWise @VWDasher

Thanks for this.

It's quite interesting that they settled in for the long run.

I've heard that they are quite adaptable,even read articles about another bird of prey, hawks, and how they use traffic lights to help hunt for food.

Ottawa also has had a falcon watch since the late 1990s.

Unfortunately, their access to some of the downtown locations was lost.

Many of the downtown buildings where nesting was happening were federal.

Also, people poisoning pigeons affected the birth rate.

It looks like the group was following a pair at the Canadian Revenue Agency Data Centre Building last spring - again not a location where a public webcam can be set up.

Chronology of the Ottawa Falcon Watch

Peregrine Falcon Watch by Chris Traynor Rowena I’ve been asked numerous times over the last few years about the status of the OFNC Falcon Watch, so perhaps it is time for an update. The OFNC Falcon Watch started in 1997

@AlsoPaisleyCat @DamienWise @SnowyCA yeah we've had one baby die from poisoned pigeon one year, sadly.

The building co who own this building set up the webcam some year back, which is very kind of them.

@VWDasher @AlsoPaisleyCat @DamienWise @SnowyCA
Reading that first sentence out of the context of the thread just woke me right up.
@AlsoPaisleyCat @DamienWise @SnowyCA @VWDasher
We have had nesting peregrine falcons in downtown Rochester NY for decades, too. For many years they nested atop a ledge on the Kodak office bldg. More recently the nest has been on the Times Square bldg. I follow them every spring on a webcam. This year, Nova and Neander began with three eggs in late March, and all three youngsters fledged the first week of June. As we go into winter here, I've enjoyed the touch of spring the Collins Street brood has brought me!
@VWDasher It must be a little scary the first time, depending on the falcon, I guess. Sometimes they seem so frustrated and ready to go...
@sunumbral it always amazes me when one takes off effortlessly, into the air. One fell off last year and figured out flying thankfully.
