Progress on London’s #airquality will reverse if make #EVs and electric vans have to pay London congestion charge.

It’s bad news for taxi companies, trades and individuals that made the switch.

It’s bad news for the lungs of those living in the capital.

Which rightwing think tank or economists advised on this very short sighted decision?

And why is Sadiq Khan following?

London congestion charge to rise to £18 – and electric vehicles will have to pay

Motoring groups criticise changes for making it ‘harder to go green’ though discounts of up to 50% will apply

The Guardian
@JugglingWithEggs I'm sure we can argue about whether the proposed discount for EV (25% for cars) is right, but it is by design a congestion charge not an emissions charge so discouraging all cars from coming into London, which has an excellent public transport alternative, is what it's for, so yes it should apply to EVs as well.
And we should also start to think about devising a way of making EVs pay to use the roads. Annual vehicle taxes are fine but they don't relate to use, and often heavy EVs should be making a contribution just as fossil fuelled cars currently do through fuel duty.

@marjolica

I agree that EVs should pay road tax - indeed I already do on my EV. A tax by usage would impact all vehicles. While I would absolutely like to see less traffic on our roads, I worry that such a tax would disproportionately impact some of the poorer rural communities that I currently work with. There are no simple solutions. But seeing people polluting our city streets day in day out with new diesel vehicles breaks my heart (and my lungs).
