I hope that I can ruin your day by getting you to read this map (courtesy wikipedia) of US town names that are portmanteaus of the two (or sometimes more) states they are near the borders of
how much better would it have been if the old film Mississippi Masala had been called Missala Masala??
@regehr you know that film’s director’s son is the mayor-elect of NYC, yes?
@fivetonsflax I only learned this recently! but for sure it's why that movie was in my mind at all

@fivetonsflax @regehr wait WHAT

(!!!) I need to go rewatch some films now

@regehr Latex... 😀
@me_ @regehr No I think it's LaTeX.
@14mission @me_ @regehr Yes; but let me indent the first paragraph by hitting the space bar five times on this Win XP Word 98 doc file
@14mission @me_ @regehr The overfull \hbox of Caddo Parish.

@regehr I successfully hit Cal-Nev-Ari, Calzona, and Calexico in a single trip.

Wanted to hit Mexicali too but the wildfires interfered.

@regehr "the Calexico-Mexicali metropolitan area" yeesh

@regehr Was wondering what the heck Kymo is, couldn't even find it on Wikipedia.

Did find the page on Wikipedia with the map, which does have an explanation for Kymo, as well as the legend for what the colors mean: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_geographic_portmanteaus

List of geographic portmanteaus - Wikipedia

@regehr "Ucolo" & "Urado"

oh my god it's even worse than I expected

@regehr no wait I take it back "Canida" is the most unforgivable
@regehr thank you this is upsetting
@SludgePhD @whitequark @regehr That's 40 percent towards what you'd need to actually yodel
@whitequark ready and valid street going across the border
@regehr I had to save that for future reference.. thank you for sharing this 😊
@regehr this is giving me the same vibes as the Japanese video game makers imagining American names
@dev also see anime names, they're so bad
@regehr @dev Karl Dandleton aptly warned, we have nothing to lose but our crypto wallets
@dev @regehr Ah, Bobson Dugnutt, brings me back.
@steve @dev @regehr oh yeah what's he been up to, lately?
@steve @dev @regehr .oO( bobson trucknut )
@dev @regehr
Bonus points if anyone can remember where this is from... Surprised John Bigbootay isn't there!

@dev @regehr i also like that these almost sound like names of star wars characters

(some of them)

@regehr @jalefkowit Amazing resource for science fiction writers who need character names.
@regehr (edit: found the article) - huh, doesn't mark the whole Delmarva peninsula
@regehr Welcome to Calzona! Home to definitely not what you're thinking of!
@regehr @SnoopJ Challenge: reconstruct the actual state names using only this map and logic, pretending you are unaware of their real names
@dx @regehr @SnoopJ i did this. works pretty well.
@regehr Lake Wissota was mentioned in Titanic even though it wouldn't exist until 1917 and the Titanic sank in 1912.

@regehr There must be kazillions of really local place names on the borders of towns:

Carlmont High School and Shopping Center: San Carlos and Belmont, CA

Herdondo Blvd: Hermosa and Redondo Beaches, CA.

@regehr Do any other countries do this?
List of geographic portmanteaus - Wikipedia

@regehr @14mission

The border portmanteaus section is virtually entirely the US though

@gbargoud The US is kind of unique for having mapped out states first and building towns later. And we have a lot of arbitrary compas-grid borders that make border-spanning towns more likely (instead of rivers or mountain ranges).
@regehr all the Utah ones are so uninspired
@regehr except Wyuta, that's ok

@ricci @regehr I live in Cache Valley where "Utida" is supposedly located. I've never heard of it. A quick Google search seems to think it's "A neigborhood of Cornish" which... does a town of 287 have distinct neighborhoods? Or maybe just on the Idaho side of Cornish, but that's Weston and Weston has 587 people. It shouldn't really have distinct neighborhoods either.

And Calneva is a resort on Tahoe I think, not a town...

As such I'm skeptical of all of this map now.

Other than Texarkana.

@regehr

Wyodak isn't even that close to the border. I am legitimately mad at this.

@regehr actually now 'texarkana' kinda makes sense
@regehr This is the Bobson Dugnutt of #maps.

@regehr
"Florgia"

I think that was Matt Gaetz's constituency.

@regehr this nonsense stops at Chicago?
@msokolov the map stops but the nonsense certainly does not
@regehr isn't there a Delmarva?
@msokolov that's the one I was thinking of
@regehr I think there is also Vershire.
@msokolov @regehr There is also New York, which is a portmanteau of New Jersey and New York.
🏃
@regehr Any day I am reminded to go listen to more Calexico is a good day.
