Red sandstone tenement in the Broomhill area of Glasgow. Outside of the city, the phrase 'Glasgow tenement' is often seen as synonymous with over-crowded pre-war slum housing but the reality was that tenements were (and still are) home to all levels of Glasgow society.

As a result, their designs ranged from the simple to the ornate, and the flats they contained from tiny singlends (a single room consisting of a cooking area, living space and bed recess, but no bathroom or indoor toilet) to palatial apartments, with massive rooms fitted with all the mod-cons, hallways big enough to play cricket in, and even space for a servant or two.

So, why are such varied buildings grouped together under a single term? Well, a tenement is really just low-rise building containing multple flats, and a shared entrance. Beyond that, all bets are off and the design depended on the area of the city, the social class it was designed for, the era it was built, and the whims of the architect selected to design it, making Glasgow tenements almost infinitely variable across the city.

@thisismyglasgow loads still left in Edinburgh, an excellent high density housing solution without the troubles of high-rises of the 60s. High time they made a comeback instead of semi-detached

A couple of years ago I was negotiating insurance for my flat with an English-based insurance company. You could tell the word 'tenement' was troubling them because of its associations. I had to describe what they were and send a photo. The premium was still too high.
