Fare of Fair

I got a little lazy with the image this morning. It’s a cluster of red Chinese tallow leaves, glossy and heart-shaped, with pine needles threading quietly behind them. The rest of the background is blurred into soft circles of light, making the whole scene resemble a floating holiday ornament—nature’s own seasonal offering.

Just returned from the hotel lobby, where I retrieved my morning coffee. It’s a ritual now, part of our travel rhythm—this quiet descent for caffeine when we’re away from home.

In the early evenings, we used to forage through unfamiliar streets, scouting restaurants with decent fare. Lately, though, I scroll through my phone and summon dinner via DoorDash. A sign of the times: food beamed to me from afar through my portable communicator. Who knew? Maybe Gene Roddenberry. Smartphones have become the ship’s computer, communicator, and tricorder all in one. No phaser yet—but give it time.

Breakfast, however, is just downstairs—a buffet of gourmet sustenance prepared for weary travelers like us. Truthfully, that’s what I’m thinking about as I type. Don’t want to miss it. Food is an addiction I’ve never fully shaken.

Eating doesn’t set us apart from other species. But we are the only ones who wield fire—and the only ones who burn much of our food before consuming it. Put that way… babble… babble…

“It isn’t all over; everything has not been invented; the human adventure is just beginning.” — Gene Roddenberry
