Bonfire Social 1.0 is live! A federated, community‑first social network built on the modular Bonfire toolkit, and it’s only the beginning.

It's time to go beyond microblogging and build apps for community organising, open science, mutual aid, and collective decision‑making. Let's take back the internet with open protocols, consent‑based governance, and portability by design.

We're crowdfunding the next phase, building community-governed social infrastructure beyond microblogging in cooperation with communities and teams:

- E2E Encryption with @swf
- Collective Moderation @iftas, @kissane
- Federated Groups & Events @kfitz, @klasse_methode
- Collective decision-making @s0hw
- Bluesky bridging @anewsocial
- Mutual Aid Networks @lynnfoster @bhaugen
- Cooperative Hosting @coopcloud @paulbutgold
- Native apps @pachli
- and more...

@bonfire

Congratulations and well done. Looking forward to the next one!

Three cheers!!!!!!!! Congratulations!

It’s a fantastic project and I hope you get to (at least briefly) savour the moment….

and then, onwards and upwards!

Congrats on the launch... it's exciting, and the next phase is even more exciting!

@bonfire

@bonfire quite a list! Congratulations.
@bonfire Congratulations!!

@bonfire

Just chipped in as much as I could! i want in on this - looking at this exact moment for Canadian infrastructure options and a handful of civid-tech nerds who want to start a prototype.

@bonfire @swf @iftas @kissane @kfitz @klasse_methode @s0hw @anewsocial @lynnfoster @bhaugen @coopcloud @paulbutgold @pachli

Looks interesting! How are you doing with:

- User migration from other Fediverse systems (such as Mastodon)
- Post scheduling?

@bonfire Fantastic to see this out!
@michael thank you for your support! ❤️

@bonfire congratulations on 1.0!

I absolutely love the Bonfire team's approach, the modular options, the focus on governance and safety, I hope this translates to support for the crowdfunding campaign!

@jaz thank you for your support! 🧡
@bonfire This is so cool. I've never seen an app with such advanced features - I can allow other accounts to edit my posts. Super excited to see how the fundraiser goes 💫

@bonfire Congrats on this historic milestone 🥳

I'm so proud of you guys, and I'm inspired by your attention to detail in many regards, I think your project will go far and see many new Bonfire servers in the coming months 🚀 ❤️

@bonfire congrats on the launch!
@bonfire Congratulations for this milestone ! You have my pledge for the indiegogo campaign 🙌
I love the way you lead the project and looking forward to all the good things you will bring to the open social web
❤️
@bonfire interesting. Is bonfire compatible with Mastodon via federation protocol?
@bitbraindev yes thanks to ActivityPub it federates with Mastodon and countless other federated apps, plus ATproto/Bluesky thanks to BridgyFed

@bonfire Phenomenal.

What a time to be alive!

@bonfire I'm watching the suggested features for migrating from other fedi software like mastodon or especially misskey and it's various forks.
@bonfire Congratulations on the launch!
@bonfire Is the screen printed art piece already gone? I don't see it in the list of campaign rewards, but with an edition of 250 it seems like there should still be some left, right? 🤔
@jfred ah sorry! it's currently only available in EU and UK because we haven't figured out shipping and customs for other places like the US
@bonfire Ahhhh, that makes sense! Thanks for the clarification :)
@bonfire Congratulations on 1.0! Such a long way coming.
Fingers crossed the campaign will be successful, and glad you asked us to be part of it.
@bonfire how is this different to mastodon and is there no way to get an account without hosting an instance?
@bonfire First I've heard of this project, and I hope you don't mind if I ask a few (really basic) questions about it to see if it's right for me. Is this based on ActivityPub? Does it incorporate existing applications as a sort of aggregator, or it is a new and separate platform?
@scooter it is based on activitypub, its a new platform and it can connect with all the existing applications and aims to bring novel types of activities and experiences into the fediverse
@bonfire your Elixir ActivityPub library has been on my radar for a while, but unfortunately pulling it in would involve having developers who solicit donations for slop code: https://github.com/bonfire-networks/bonfire-app/blob/main/AGENTS.md in my dependency graph, and I can’t justify that for software that’s meant to serve the marginalized communities currently being harmed by LLMs like the ones you’re using.

@bonfire why am I getting AI vibes from this?

@nullpotential Not sure?

The artwork is handmade by an artist and screenprinters as explained here: https://www.indiegogo.com/en/projects/bonfire/community#/section/art-as-a-reward-4672933

The video is handmade stopmotion animation.

Bonfire: building blocks for communities on the open social web by Bonfire - Indiegogo

From platforms to communities: a federated social web with shared foundations and co‑created spaces for gathering, care, connection, and stewardship.

@bonfire I apologize. My initial comment was rude; I should not have presumed.

That said, someone else replied below with a link to what appears to be your github. They pointed out an AGENTS.md, which is linked to under .github > copilot-instructions.md

There is, in the same github repo, also a .claude folder with a CLAUDE.md containing extensive instructions, as well as a rubber_duck.chatmode.md.

Were LLM/vibe coding involved in the development of the project? Will they be used in the future?
@nullpotential as you can see from some of the documents you referenced, we sometimes experiment with using LLM tools for "rubber duck" debugging when stuck on a problem, but none of the Bonfire extensions or features have been AI-generated
@bonfire Could you tell what exactly this is and how it’s different from using Mastodon or so? I don’t mean a/the pitch-story for investors (I could read the lengthy campaign then) but simple facts?
@nSonic both bonfire social and https://openscience.network are built on bonfire, they address different needs and have different features and UX. We are now working with communities that needs tools for organising and coordinating (events, decision making, mutual aid, etc) which will result in new extensions that everyone will be able to install and use in their own bonfire app. We're not competing or building a mastodon alternative, we're building tools for communities in the open social web...
Open Science Network

Reclaim scientific discourse with federated digital spaces where researchers shape their own conversations, data, and collaborations

@bonfire congratulations. That’s really exciting for you. This is an ambitious project with great value.

(I know you posted this news a month ago, but I just now saw a boost in my feed. And the congrats is still in order.)

@bonfire Why are you posting from Mastodon instead of Bonfire?
