Please join me in a big round of applause for Jean-Baptiste Kempf from @videolan for his contributions to #SoftwareFreedom 👏

(Together with Raphael Barbieri I had the honour to hand over the European #SFSAward 2025 to him in the name of #Lugbz and @fsfe . )

What is the significance of the traffic cones?

@androcat @kirschner @videolan @fsfe

The app icon is a traffic cone.

@troy_frizzell @androcat @kirschner @videolan @fsfe the software is born in a French school and the students use to bring back traffic cones encountered when coming back from student parties. There was some lying in the student union room and they decided to use it as the software logo and after decided to kept it.
@troy_frizzell @androcat @kirschner @videolan @fsfe and the **real** reason why it has been started is even more 🤯 (don't known if it available in English somewhere online...)

@pmiossec

Is it wrong to say that this is a very French way of getting things done?

You know that meme of a huge complex system being propped up by a small bit of software that is maintained by an individual?

That meme is the video industry and VLC is that small bit of software. I literally could not do my job without it.

All of the honors should go to Kempf. All of them.
