Very sad news: OpenTopomap is being retired, basically.

Many thanks to the people who gave their time over 14 years so that we could use this wonderful gift.

Supplement:

In his message the main developer (?) of Openstreetmap mentions that there may be a successor.

If you think you are able to: Get in touch with him and ask if and how you can help.

@lupo there are a number with contours and even more with hill shading (see for example Tracestack Topo on osm.org, or what we provide at osm.ch).

However none of these have a similar style as OpenTopoMap.

@simon @lupo IIRC, neither have a public style we can steal ideas from :-P
@mdione @lupo the SOSM/osm.ch styles are all open source.

@simon @mdione

Unfortunately those styles are far from the clarity and readability of the style that is used for OpenTopomap.

Those styles either lack contour lines or it is not clear which paths are still suitable for motor vehicles.

@lupo ah what a shame! Thank you for posting about it as I don't think I'd have realised otherwise

@lupo Take a look at OpenOrienteeringMap which takes #OpenStreetMap data as well as contour data and renders it in a variety of ways. As the name suggests, it's mainly for #orienteering, but it may be useful in other ways

@lupo That is indeed is a sad thing. OpenTopoMap raster layer has been available for ages. I'm adding a "set to be discontinued" note here: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Raster_tile_providers#Base_maps

You can see this list has some other hill-shaded map options, but maybe less permissive. For example ThunderForest outdoor style is beautiful, but only free for low-traffic experiments.

The developer seems to be hinting that a similarly styled vector tile approach will be possible at some point: https://github.com/der-stefan/OpenTopoMap/issues/365#issuecomment-2825441010

@lupo 😒 Many people, especially in France will be sad to learn that. OpenTopoMap is appreciated for its resemblance with IGN topographic map style.
Farewell OpenTopoMap, and thank you so much for all!
@lupo Oh no. Too sad I don't know how to orient outdoors anymore. OpenTopoMap was by far my favourite OSM style. But I was always curious for a Vector version, this might be the beginning of a great successor as well and I am really looking forward.
In the meantime Bergfex OSM style ist great as well
@lupo That rendering style would be excellent for @CoMaps
