The Billionaires Who Failed to Stop Zohran Mamdani, and How Much They Spent

Over 20 billionaires donated to super PACs supporting Cuomo or in opposition to the next mayor, Zohran Mamdani.

@pluralistic The NY post is at it really heavy today. This is just the beginning of the smears. Recall all the crap the bigots tried to trash Obama with. It's going to be 3 times that with Mamdani.
@timo21 @pluralistic Something we can all agree on
@mbybee @pluralistic If left and right can agree the billionaires that own the world's media are to be opposed, we may make some progress in the world.

@timo21 @pluralistic With the exception of the actually insane cultists, I've found that a remarkable number of right-wing people are closer to leftists than MAGA politicans in ideals.

You can generally get them started pretty quickly on a rant about fair prices, local stores being better than megachains, and billionaires needing to be taxed.

No, seriously - if democrats did this they'd quickly find their feared enemy growing smaller & weaker. The huge fallacy of the past 3 decades or so is that socially responsible & respectful policies aren't WILDLY more popular across the electorate than anything The Right™️ stands for. https://bsky.brid.gy/r/https://bsky.app/profile/did:plc:7vmqlqtvqkkmuegzp7efeptu/post/3m4u2ciskxk2c #politics

Helvede
@mbybee @timo21 @pluralistic the US Right has done a shockingly good job of dressing itself up as populists, despite being led by a deeply politically-connected billionaire coastal elite
The exact same voters who were vocal Tea Party lower-case "L" libertarians 10 years have been slow-walked by charismatic opinions into upholding thr antithesis of every principle they first espoused

@mbybee @timo21 @pluralistic
I think that's because for a lot of people, what determines the left/right distinction is not what people 'want', it's how they think they can get there. I think a lot of voters for right parties simply no longer believe that even social democracy will work, but they've been told by the media that kicking out immigrants will work.

'Hegemony Now!' has a more extensive version of this argument. It's worth a read.

@mbybee @timo21 @pluralistic
They might be actual conservatives. I.e. they wish to preserve status quo (ante), as opposed to the maga authoritarian wreckers current operating the levers of power.
Status quo ante wasn't that great for many people, but perhaps still better than the current situation.
