@timo21 @pluralistic With the exception of the actually insane cultists, I've found that a remarkable number of right-wing people are closer to leftists than MAGA politicans in ideals.
You can generally get them started pretty quickly on a rant about fair prices, local stores being better than megachains, and billionaires needing to be taxed.
No, seriously - if democrats did this they'd quickly find their feared enemy growing smaller & weaker. The huge fallacy of the past 3 decades or so is that socially responsible & respectful policies aren't WILDLY more popular across the electorate than anything The Right™️ stands for. https://bsky.brid.gy/r/https://bsky.app/profile/did:plc:7vmqlqtvqkkmuegzp7efeptu/post/3m4u2ciskxk2c #politics

I think that's because for a lot of people, what determines the left/right distinction is not what people 'want', it's how they think they can get there. I think a lot of voters for right parties simply no longer believe that even social democracy will work, but they've been told by the media that kicking out immigrants will work.
'Hegemony Now!' has a more extensive version of this argument. It's worth a read.

They might be actual conservatives. I.e. they wish to preserve status quo (ante), as opposed to the maga authoritarian wreckers current operating the levers of power.
Status quo ante wasn't that great for many people, but perhaps still better than the current situation.
