@alxd Yes sure! But this article tends to suggest that the increase in solar panels led to a rapid increase in tube wells, and then farmers started to plan thirstier versions of rice and wheat, leading to more demand for water than usual.... though I'm a bit skeptical of the report as I am with everything I see in mainstream media these days. Could be the attempts of lobbyists to throw doubt over adoption of solar?

We are all fatigued and worried with current affairs of the world, but having grown up in a place like Uganda, well, the only place I could find a nice place to live in was in my daydreams and somehow those seeped into my stories, and I really hope I pull this one off! I'll give it my best shot. I guess we need stories like this to explore all the possible good futures we can have.

@dilmandila I have read posts from some people who argue that reducing #solarpunk to aesthetics is missing the point of solarpunk (althouth they also say that if you misunderstand solarpunk and go buy solar panels you're at least not doing any harm...)

But since you already have or are working on a post-capitalism concept your solarpunk film will have a good foundation!

What sold me to the genre was articles defining punk as resistance and that renewable energy without some kind of social justice and with continued economic inequality is just green washing. Like in a punk world you can't have Nazi EVs, or mines that use child labour and pollute. And so capitalism can't exist in a #solarpunk world, as it will only lead to exploitation and inequality.

Although “capitalism is incompatible with solarpunk ideals” is probably how I would frame it. “A solarpunk world” is where we live **right now**; sustainability *is punk* because it is profoundly countercultural and openly opposed by the hegemon. Solarpunk is what we do about it now and in the near future - hopefully in the less near future it won’t be punk anymore, it’ll be normative.

When art depicts hypothetical pasts, presents, or futures where ecological and social sustainability is not punk/ countercultural but rather mainstream, making that art (creating alternative visions of how we could live) *is* a solarpunk act, but the art itself is somewhere on a scale toward utopian. It’s equally necessary to consider where we want to end up, but I think we have too little art tethered back into envisioning the bridge of how we get *there* from *here* (which is what solarpunk is really about: planting the seeds of that world without waiting for permission.)

@dilmandila Traditional Malay houses are built on stilts to avoid flooding. It could be also adapted for farming, with pillars supporting platforms for crops. Traditionally the pillars were hard wood, but these days concrete is cheaper and easier to maintain. But you also have to take into account the weight of soil and water loss in the plants. Fertigation or hydroponics might be helpful for this.

The weight of the soil and water is an issue, I'd assume such a structure could perhaps be best for vegetables that can grow on thin soils?

I hadn't heard of hydroponics before but let me dive into it right away!

@dilmandila Some helpful terminology: Hydroponics: Growing plants in a water medium. Aquaculture: Growing fish in a tank. Aquaponics: doing both at the same time. Dutch buckets are a type of hydroponics.

There is also fertigation, which uses soil polybags and drips in water and fertiliser.

@dilmandila Another alternative to flooding is to use plants that can withstand periodic flooding or are semi aquatic (Like water spinach). The easiest way to find them is to tap into indigenous knowledge and ask people what they plant in damp waterlogged soils.

@dilmandila In Bangladesh they use floating farms to deal with flooding. I think there are South American traditions too.

@ubi @dilmandila Yes, chinampas - artificial islands built on the edges of or within natural lakes, taking advantage of the existing body of water. They're not really floating per se, more like built up from the lakebed, but they're along the same ideas. There's a few projects building or maintaining some, some as living archaeology type undertakings and others for research or as part of bigger permaculture projects - it sounds like they're a lot of work to construct, but they're worth it for not needing additional water inputs and being incredibly productive. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinampa

@ubi This is really helpful. A lot of terminology to help in research.....

I looked up hyrdoponics and the story is it created a bubble a few years back, which went pop. But I saw all of them were billion-dollar companies with hi-tech, and robots and such stuff. Though the vertical farms I take inspiration from are a trending around here, and its people growing food in pots and plastic pipes......

@dilmandila From my experiences with planting in pipes, the main problem is that they dry out quite fast. But then again, irrigation is probably not an important detail for a film.

Hydroponics can be high tech, a few pipes attached to a pump or it can be just plants in a bucket full of catfish.

@dilmandila i've seen some impressive work done using locally refined clay earth bricks or tiles making catalan/timbrel vault roofs which can apparently are easily strong enough to build another storey on top of despite how thin they are, and their curve can be fairly shallow too. rohtak dome roof from India is similar.
however in my area earthquakes are a concern, so i wonder how plain masonry needs to be reinforced
