Wow, whoever engineered the Sandals Resort (Whitehouse, Jamaica) ocean rooms... did a superb job, they are still standing and roofs intact after Hurricane Melissa (though, it looks like you've got to swim out to your room now) #HurricaneMelissa #Melissa
Lots of peeling of roofs even there though on shore. #Melissa #Sandals
Survivors congregating at the pharmacy and supermarket in Whitehouse. Supermarket -- which was fully covered with solar panels -- no solar panels anymore. #Jamaica #WhiteHouse #Melissa #HurricaneMelissa #Disaster
Massive gathering of people around the local gas station in Black River. By now people are out of fuel for generators. Likely that gas station is dry by now, I expect there are a lot of unhappy people there gathered. #BlackRiver #Melissa #HurricaneMelissa #disasters #Jamaica
***one thing I have learned from past disasters, is relying on gasoline generators -- although common -- only works for a few days, because you eventually have to get gasoline for that generator. During Hurricane Maria, I was hearing ham radio folks for only 2 days on generator in Puerto Rico and Dominica, before they lost contact. People with battery/solar can last a lot longer (assuming you still have a solar panel... very likely chance after a CAT5 hurricane you have lost it, your roof, everything you own)
Massive pileup of vehicles south of a bridge into Black River. I assume this is because the river is incapable of handling the weight of a vehicle, and people are walking over into what (was) town. #HurricaneMelissa #Melissa #BlackRiver #Jamaica

You can see where survivors are based on the blue tarps. Tells you they have some resources to get a tarp and they are trying to establish shelter, probably at home. Oct 31.

Surge was so intense, it cut two new channels in this thin bit of land. I hope all these people living out in those areas left before the hurricane arrived. #Jamaica #surge #HurricaneMelissa #Melissa
@ai6yr Either that or this was when the convoy arrived but before the bridge was inspected for safety
@weathermatrix Not an exact date on that image, October 31st... second flight over by NOAA Emergency overflight. (thank heavens they are still helping).
@ai6yr Apparently they were surprised to find the bridge intact!

@ai6yr My friend in NC's solar panels got through Helene quite well, although his area mostly got flooding. He was the only electricity in town for quite a while and acted as a respite center. He's planning to boost them a bit.
@ai6yr That’s where those foldable units come in handy. Store them under a bed, when the storm is over, pull them out, hook them up and you have power.
