Killer quote:

“I’m going back to the Fediverse. Back to Mastodon. To the nerds, the hobbyists, the idealists. The people who don’t talk about reach, but about relevance. To those who understand that decentralization isn’t nostalgic, it’s the future. That digital sovereignty isn’t a gimmick, it’s a survival strategy.“

A Mastodon Migration From Bluesky Would Be Different - Absolutely Maybe

The Mastodon migration from Twitter in 2022 was massive for the non-commercial community network: The number of accounts swelled with more than…

Absolutely Maybe

@brembs Are the words and phrases from the quote "AI" slop or does "AI" slop use them because it's popular now?

I can't tell anymore, for the first time in my life, I am getting uncontrollably malinformed.

EDIT: Forgot to add double quotes. Use them, please, my brain is getting infected with the thought that this actually is AI.

@brembs While I share the author's anxieties about the future of Bluesky, I think she's too dismissive of why the people bounced off Mastodon in the first place.

"Newcomers were often met with unwelcoming gatekeeping...[but] The culture clashes gradually settled down, and the new community affected the culture in ways that I think improved Mastodon."

This comes off as profoundly myopic to me, as nearly everyone I know in real life who's tried this platform recently still finds it toxic.

@brembs I think most of us are here because we understand what's wrong with the platform model, and we have a vision on how to fix it. It's a good vision. I believe in it.

Most people don't care, though, and that needs to be okay, too.

And that's where the real disconnect is happening - Mastodon has become a hostile place for people who don't have opinions about network infrastructure, and that encompasses most of my friends.

@brembs ya well I'm not going to "accept all cookies" to read your article.

@brembs I'm here because there are lots of people who know what "Linux" is, and they use it.

Also, I have great conversions about sewing techniques and tools. And cockatiels.

If someone is being an ass (arse), there is a block button.

"I refuse to have a battle of wits with an unarmed opponent."

@Björn Brembs but I hope the next big surge of users will find it more welcoming.
well, they won't if they behave like the twits who switched to the fediverse after the musk.

@brembs

I've been on Mastodon since the migration in November 2022. I still love Mastodon.

I am bridging to BlueSky with Bridgy Fed, but recently I've been followed by a spammy BlueSky-based account trying to sell me BlueSky exposure.

I have the bridge mostly so I can see interesting things that might circulate from BlueSky, but that requires that those accounts are actually bridged, and most aren't, so I'm considering removing my Bridgy Fed link as it's probably not worth it to me.

@munroe

Similar to me, but I'll keep the bridge to tell people on there that we're still here 😁

@brembs Very interesting and informativ. Thank You for the link!
