I’m glad he called out the non-sequitur use of the title of the song at the end of the chorus.*

As a songwriter IT BUGS ME SO MUCH.

It’s such a rookie mistake. Like yes, the last line of the chorus is the most powerful position in which to place the words of your song’s title, but it must flow logically from what precedes it!

*is it the chorus? Or a post-chorus? The structure is kinda muddled in that regard, which is another thing that Todd calls out.

I’m sorry I just can’t stop thinking about Taylor Swift’s latest album. Like Todd in the Shadows, it makes me angry at just how bad the songwriting is. Not just the *lyrical content* of the songs, but how poorly they are crafted from a structural standpoint.

“Elizabeth Taylor” is another track where the title is just needlessly shoved into the chorus, and the verses require personal knowledge of Taylor Swift’s dating life, and only superficial familiarity of Elizabeth Taylor for the bridge.

All you really need to know about Elizabeth Taylor for this song is that she was a glamorous movie star of yore, who had a lot of famous romantic relationships. And that she had a perfume called White Damonds.
That’s probably all T-Swift knows about her, anyhow.
Also the way her name is just INJECTED into the song with bombastic vocals like the Kool-Aid Man crashing the party cracks me up.

It reminds me of that Barbra Streisand song, except that was a goofy bit of fun, and this is not.

I had spouse buy a bag of potatoes to hand out to the kids if they didn’t want candy. But no kids were coming by. We had a slow trickle of kids, and had forgotten about the potatoes. But then a big group came through, and I remembered the potatoes. Every kid wanted a potato! They ran down the street yelling at the other kids, WE GOT POTATOES!
