I wouldn't be too surprised if this is a thing. A lot of these folks voted for Obama in 2008 out of economic fear and a sense that Phil "Mental Recession" Gramm was maybe not going to care about them.
As Jess Piper says, it was never going to be the Epstein files that ends Trumpism. It was always going to be the economic pain.
(I mean, talking about Epstein is a cover for some MAGAs who are feeling the economic pain.)
Bigotry isn't going to be the secret sauce that gets these people back. Responding to their economic desperation will. The GOP owns bigotry outright and the Dems, for all their efforts, will never do it better.

I am beginning to think it's like some sort of a mass psychosis--they lost the ability to form a logical thought pattern, to reason, to see the hypocrisy.

It's just arrogance and bigotry. People who got a hand up and got ahead can either recognize that, be grateful, and pay it forward. Or they can be MAGA/Maple MAGA and imagine it's because of their genetic superiority, and rail against any policy that would help them because it might also benefit nonwhite people and young people.
Obama tried to tell the US that we live in a society, that other people build our bridges, and was roundly mocked by those people.
