Damn. That is brutal. Amazon is cutting 30,000 corporate jobs (about 9% of its corporate workforce) beginning tomorrow. The layoffs will hit various groups, including HR, devices, and IT. CEO Jassy stated the move will help reduce bureaucracy and boost the company's use of AI. The ultimate goal is to speed up AI adoption and cost cutting to boost Amazon’s bottom line

@nixCraft well maybe amazon becomes now shit enough iIl stop using it completely

@Jonly @nixCraft

I haven't bought anything from Amazon for about 15 years. It's easier than you think.

@Jonly I've already dropped them completely. There are many options for everything you do now with Amazon.

@nixCraft Ironically, CEOs and upper management are the easiest to replace with GPTs. That saves the most money, too.

AI Is Laying Off... Senior Executives

YouTube
@Infrapink @nixCraft I remember my professor for digital transformation showing exactly the research on this topic long before the launch of ChatGPT. The easier to automate jobs are the ones for high skilled workers. These end turning into Uber drivers or food delivery workers.

@Infrapink @nixCraft It looks like this is the core reason: "compensat[ing] for overhiring during the peak demand of the pandemic..."

The lines mentioning AI are comments from Jassy in June and a "eMarketer analyst."

I don't doubt that AI plays some role in this, but we should expect cost control in the form of layoffs even if AI is an adjacent (not primary) reason.

@MidniteMikeWrites @Infrapink @nixCraft didn't we go through tech layoffs like 2 years ago because of pandemic over hiring? That excuse shouldn't have legs
@Infrapink @nixCraft AI? All I need is an RNG to build a nonsense generator on.
@nixCraft great. Shall get prepped to potentially getting fucked a bit more with shipping.

@nixCraft 60,000 warehouse staff too.

That's a lot of people unlikely to order from Amazon again.

@nixCraft

When Amazon goes this way it is sure as hell they will reach the bottom line. Meaning rock bottom.

@nixCraft Someone please take an ice pick to the AI bubble.
@sirwumpus @nixCraft Or any of its promoters, for that matter.
@nixCraft
Workforce: "Cool! AI can do x, y & z type of tasks ... kind of .."
Bosses: "Cool, you're all sacked"!
@acesabe @nixCraft “You’re the one who does X and Z. The senior VP for marketing does Y.”
@nixCraft in translation, economy has tanked, but we can't blame narcissist in charge.
Sure, it is AI, sure Amazon 🙄

@nixCraft In 2023, they laid off a number of Alexa developers.

I have a bunch, not my choice .. such is family.

Pretty shortly after, they got bad. Really bad. The kids yell at them for their inability to sort language. When playing music, 'STOP' often does nothing. 'QUIETER' now usually mistaken now for 'FIRE', resulting in a warning to call 9-1-1.

This should be AI-101. Anyways, logic would say maybe fix that before rolling the layoffs.

@cowman @nixCraft that would mean that they care about customers, which they dont
@nixCraft Nice to see Amazon going all-in on the AI suicide cult. Be good to say goodbye to Jeff Bozos and his garbage.

@nixCraft

No... By all means... Lean in to the absolutely obvious f'ing bubble. Let's rush the collapse of all the infrastructure that holds up the modern world.

I gotta learn how to start a fire by hand... The future is awful.

@nixCraft

He's desperate to catch up in the trillionaire race.

@nixCraft "A program begun early this year to bring employees back in the office five days per week, among tech's most stringent, has failed to generate sufficient attrition"

This is one of the first cases I've seen where this was explicitly stated as a *goal* of an RTO program.

@azonenberg
I don't suppose it was (as) explicit, but I remember attrition being one of the goals with the Twitter RTO push.
@nixCraft

@nixCraft

Gotta save $$ to pay for the Epstein Memorial Ballroom

@nixCraft and replacing them with how many H-1Bs?
@nixCraft Jassys term has been a nothingburger. No innovation, no growth, no new products. No real AI offering.

Its literally the only option he has to grow the business value at this point besides a stock buyback. Expect him to resign in a year.
@nixCraft They just can't make the line go up enough anymore. Only the pipe dream of LLM's being AI has the promise of cutting costs enough to increase profits. Unfortunately, even if LLM's could do what their publicity says they can, there's only so many people you can fire, then what?
@nixCraft I hope it bites them in the ass.
@nixCraft This goes with illegally raising prices on other people's products if you don't have Prime it seems.

@nixCraft

Time to short-sell Amazon.

@nixCraft just in time for the holidays
@nixCraft why bother with Amazon when there better options
@nixCraft That's not good at all... I seriously doubt this will help them deliver packages any faster. It's clear they dont care about their customer AND their employees...

@nixCraft I wonder, is there a way to make an amazon-alternative in the fediverse?

Where small businesses can have their shops on whatever server they like, but still better discoverability than independent websites in the free internet. All alternatives I know would be central platforms and therefore not enshittification proof

@sco_tty Building the software part is easy. The hard part is managing compliance, legal issues, taxes (federal, state, VAT, GST, etc.), and import and export duties, in addition to payment processing and logistics. This is why very few companies have a monopoly in e-commerce. Whenever a new player emerges, it is either crushed or bought out. Just a name few things. I no expert. But, that is what I think
@nixCraft
Oh, good. So they will be slashing prices too?
Or maybe pay higher taxes to help support those they’ve undercut?
@nixCraft We canceled our subs, and they're showing their office personnel the same respect they gave to their warehouse personnel. Amazon owes us all. Tax the shit out of them.
@nixCraft This will not end well for Amazon. A good thing imho. I have avoided Amazon now for a good couple of years plus. No cheaper, no better and the Prime offering is now shabby. Enshitified.
@nixCraft AI is not buying shit from Amazon. People do. The road is long but I can’t wait until the turning point where AI will be the downfall of Tech giants.
@nixCraft If you genuinely wanted to cut bureaucracy, it's upper management that needs cutting...
