Welp, I did it. Initiated the deletion request for my discord account earlier today. Of course it takes two weeks to "process", so I'll have to check back later to make sure it's actually gone (and of course they'll use my message history for LLM training, but that's mostly just me being horny/excited about conventions).

What are folks using these days? I have Matrix (and a private server there) and Signal (have literally never sent/recieved a message, heh). Telegram is out for obvious reasons. I'm especially interested in what other furs are using since I'd like to exchange info/coordinate convention plans but I'm open to suggestions from my non-furry friends too!

@notthatdelta IRC and XMPP/Jabber here. Alongside Discord (because friend groups).

I'd like to set up Signal, but their history of happening to break third-party clients with updates makes it hard to integrate for me.

@digitalfox I need to get back on IRC! It's only been... shit, like 24 years since I've touched it.

I'm sure it'll all come back to me after a quarter-century, right?

@notthatdelta Ooh, then there have been some improvements for you! IRCv3 offers things like message history across clients, reactions, threads, etc. A friend set up a small Ergo server recently and it's been neat (and it's been showing how much I need to update my IRC client/core).

I still think modern XMPP is in a better spot for most folks (see: the open source Snikket project), but IRC does still work.

@notthatdelta

Damn, my friend is right, we do need a replacement for Discord

@cadenwolfgang Matrix has been... okay, sort of?

It doesn't quite have feature parity and my experience so far has been buggy at best (mostly around calling/screenshares). It's also frustrating that the apps don't seem to be fully feature-compatible with one another.

But, I'm using a privately hosted server for Matrix, so I'm never going to have to worry about age verification or payment info leaking!

@notthatdelta Been on xmpp here. Monocles works great as a client on android and gajim works alright on the desktop.
@desert Appreciate the suggestions! I'm playing around with IRC right now (and Matrix has been working acceptably well) but I may add XMPP to my list soon.
