I would be glad to donate to the #Python project, but doing so requires me to divulge my name and contact information as per their 501(c)(3) charitable organisation status:

"Contact information is required for tax reporting purposes and will be shared only with the US government."

Considering the current status of the US government, I don't feel comfortable doing this. Are there some other ways to donate to Python project without getting the US government involved?

@ThePSF

The PSF has withdrawn a $1.5 million proposal to US government grant program

In January 2025, the PSF submitted a proposal to the US government National Science Foundation under the Safety, Security, and Privacy of Op...

@harrysintonen Just lie—or maybe leave it blank? I haven't tried. The only reason for the "requirement" is if you want to claim the tax deduction. I must admit though that I'm puzzled: I don't remember other 501(c)(3)s doing that.
@zillion @harrysintonen I suspect it's this: if you want to write it off and get a formal receipt, you need to enter in this information.

@harrysintonen @ThePSF There are some other funding initiatives from time to time that might work for you. I know of two:

At the year's end, JetBrains usually runs a fundraiser where all the money from PyCharm subscriptions goes to the PSF.

Sometimes there's a Humble Bundle where the charity is the PSF, these are interesting because you can both pick the bundle value and the amount of it that goes to the PSF.

@harrysintonen @ThePSF if you have a serious threat model here around your contact info being abused by the US state as the result of a donation, indeed dont.

If it is purely around comfort, not safety, might be worth evaluating whether your response is proportionate. PSF is putting serious skin in the game, worth reciprocating if you appreciate them. I dont know about u, but id the US state apparatus wanted my home address, I am sure they can get it regardless of donating.

@chartgerink @harrysintonen @ThePSF I'd think that it is not so much about the address but more about the fact that you donated to an "unwanted" organization? Which might have consequences the next time you try to enter the US.
@schmic @chartgerink @harrysintonen @ThePSF if that actually happens, entering the USA will be an extremely risky idea anyway
@harrysintonen @ThePSF Python is not a project associated with Software in the Public Interest, but maybe it could be in the future or if there is another partner funding organization like that it might add a layer of obfuscation.
@harrysintonen @ThePSF I guess anything else in the open source python ecosystem would do!
