Let me tell you about an #AtomicAge monstrosity

#ProjectPluto

It wasn't a #nuclear #missile, it was a nuclear *powered* missile. So it could fly almost forever

Do you see the teensy tiny problem?

The fucking thing constantly spewed nuclear #radiation

🤦

Luckily canceled

Constantly irradiating the atmosphere might be slightly bad huh?

Glad to put that in the dustbin of history

Right?

"Russia tested new nuclear-powered #Burevestnik cruise missile"

https://www.reuters.com/world/china/russia-tested-new-nuclear-powered-cruise-missile-top-general-says-2025-10-26/

Fucking #Russia

@benroyce Gad. Pluto was UTTERLY MAD. They ended up altering its use plan to just fly back and forth over the target nation until it fell out of the sky, spewing radiation as it went, until the entire region was contaminated.

@benroyce that’s the kind of dirty weapon I’m pretty sure is already banned by the Geneva convention or something, but then again Putin is also technically a wanted man globally but no one has arrested him yet even though he’s been traveling here and there.

I remember as a kid believing in international law and order but I guess that was never a thing. I’d ask for a refund but I’m not entirely sure how that would even work yet or who I need to make my case to.

@taxet

We're leaving the era of international norms (which was always flouted anyways) and entering the era of "I can do anything I want, who cares who I hurt LOL"

😒

@benroyce More than anyone ever wanted to know, here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/9M730_Burevestnik
9M730 Burevestnik - Wikipedia

@benroyce I read an article about that type of nuclear missle. The author described it as a “flying Chernobyl”.

@Robgbysea

well now it's real rather than some old cautionary tale

thanks to fucking Russia

@benroyce i notice it doesn't say "successfully tested"
@benroyce Appeared in a grim #SF novella by @cstross called #AColderWar as #XKPluto IIRC.
It seems very expensive and of dubious utility now.
Mind you, #Russia looks increasingly that way.
