#3159 - Continents
@xkcd I learned about continental drift as a kid and had no idea it was a recent discovery.
I grew up along the San Andreas fault and everyone around here has seen pictures like this (swiped from the #Exploratorium website) that showed slippage. It just made the whole processs just seem kind of obvious. But I guess just obvious in hindsight.
And there's the whole Africa and South America fitting together thing.
@14mission @xkcd The History section of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Continental_drift is fascinating. Seems like there were various ideas about the movement of the continents over the centuries but what changed around 1950 (plus or minus a few decades) was learning more about the mechanisms moving the continents and gathering new data.
