Brunelles is my new guitar pedal project made around some spare parts. This is a kind of upgrade of my Aelis platform (based on the Spin FV-1 DSP).

Controls:
– Rotary encoder + switch
– Endless potentiometer
– 128Γ—64 OLED display
– Footswitch + LED

Features:
– Β΅C: XIAO #RP2040
– Codec: CS4272 (or 71)
– True bypass

It’s the first time I use mostly SMD components. I’m not very happy with the routing but I have to start somewhere.

I implemented an optional balanced input after the buffer for the CS4272 codec so it can go full swing but I’m not sure it is really necessary, considering the guitar signal is unbalanced to start with. I’ll probably build both versions to check if there is a difference.

I largely reworked the Brunelles layout and routing.

In the meantime I received another PCB I designed to validate a few things before sending the Brunelles PCB for fabrication. This is a CS4272 audio codec breakout.

The chip placement is not bad, but I definitely need to sharpen my skills with SMD capacitor soldering! Look at those placements! πŸ˜‚ I also need decent tweezers and a better sight.

I’ll publish the schematics + PCB soon.

Continuing this paused project started a few years ago… Meanwhile the Raspberry team released the #RP2350 which is a significant upgrade to the #RP2040, offering more power for signal processing.

The PCB is populated with the SMD components and the lowest through-hole parts.

I started the mechanical work. I only have a hand-held drill and as usual I struggle to place the holes right. 😬

Before continuing soldering, I have to check if everything is fitting and vertically aligning well.
