Absolutely no offense meant, but maybe relying on Amazon (who are sort of antithetical to everything Signal stands for) for anything isn't the greatest of ideas?
@Mer__edith
Signal server component does depend on AWS components eg. Dynamodb as is documented here: https://blog.iriyanto.com/self-deploy-the-latest-version-of-signal-server-v2025082200
blaming Signal for using Amazon isn’t?
@fedithom @Mer__edith good point, and let's not forget the multi-billion investment of Amazon-AWS in Israel. This is also a good reason to find an alternative. I was proud of Signal, but discovering their dependency on AWS made me open my eyes.

The AWS Israel (Tel Aviv) Region consists of three Availability Zones, giving customers more choice and flexibility to leverage advanced technologies from the world’s leading cloud provider. The addition of the new Region is a natural progression of our investment and support of our customers in Israel, and will continue powering their digital transformation. The Tel Aviv Region allows customers to run workloads with the benefit of higher availability, performance, security, and scalability. Data is securely stored in Israel and will serve end users with even lower latency.
@Mer__edith thanks for posting.
Related: why is this not showing on:
https://status.signal.org
i do not want to find this first thing on Social Media, also why is not @signalapp posting this as well?
[Update: the status page is now saying »❌ Signal is experiencing technical difficulties. We are working hard to restore service as quickly as possible.«]
Thank you for the notification.
I'd be interested in why https://status.signal.org is still silent on this, because this is where I first checked this morning.
While I appreciate it you're taking responsibility, it shouldn't be the job of the president to announce issues like this.
@Mer__edith Maybe Signal is too dependent on Amazon.
Why put all your eggs in one basket?
You might wanna use some European Web Services in case something like this happens.
@RubenWA Amazon Web Services is a large provider for internet traffic as well.
The outage of one of their main internet traffic 'hubs', us-east-01, seems to be the cause of the current disruptions in internet traffic between the US and Europe.
But yes, decentralising servers for redundancy in case of such disruptions isn't a bad idea.
@Mer__edith Thanks for your efforts! Keep up the great work 👏 👍
Nonetheless announcing this shouldn't be your job IMHO... it should be handled via https://status.signal.org/ and @signalapp . 🤔
@adbenitez @jwildeboer
Or use x chat 😂🤣😂
He promotes x chat now (objectively)
DeltaChat is good but the problem here is not the Signal..
Signal wasn't the only one that had problems today.. these things happen rarely..
@jwildeboer the right decision ignoring that a lot of the millions spend by #signal go to #Amazon, man I hate this timeline
@Mer__edith I was expecting https://status.signal.org/ to show some sort of indication of there being an issue but it just says everything is working. It was my first port of call when I saw messages weren't sending for me.
Downdetector seems to provide a more realistic picture.
It does now, at least for me.
I would've liked something showing up on the Signal mastodon account
Maybe after this outage, it would be better to create a mirror for Signal servers? So that if AWS has another issue, Signal could keep working — the messenger is convenient and great, but relying on a single provider is a bad idea…
@Mer__edith
Using the opportunity to ask about Signal's features;
I see polls are being developed which is great! You guys should also consider adding the option for pinning messages, to make group chats complete.
The triple ratchet rocks!
