Q: Should I do some smol #website on @torproject / #Tor network that'll be a good starting page?

  • Nothing fancy, just a basic HTML page that forwards people to sites both on the surface web and Tor, with an #AOL-style, curated catalog in it.

OFC I'd also consider putting the same site on the #SurfaceWeb as well, making shure it's brutally simple and will just work with #CLI / #TUI #browsers like #Lynx / #LynxBrowser...

Nothing fancy, just a basic site - like #FrogFind (made by @ActionRetro):

Espechally since FrogFind gets hammered by "#AI" #bots who abuse it to circumvent blockages and because some folks may just want to have a proper, curated catalog instead, because #Enshittification is so rampant that #SearchResults these days are useless unless you know the topic well enough to go !trustworthysite.example "example search term" instead of just "example search term"...

FrogFind!

Think #smolweb¹ as proposed by @adele, because #HTTP & #HTML is good and #Gemini is #cringe!
About smolweb

smolweb.org promotes simple unbloated web. It provides resources to actors who want to participate.

I'd consider this project if the costs of running it get ROI'd by donations.

  • No offense, but I'd be on the hook for double digit monthly hosting costs even with the cheapest VPS + domain.

Also I'm not shure how fast this would escalate. Maybe @ActionRetro has numbers re: the costs of running #FrogFind from which I can extrapolate a worst-case scenario (granted I don't intend to host a copy of FrogFind!)

As for supporting #WAP, [like
@ActionRetro did] that's still easy given #Germany basically keeps #2G up as vestigal / emergency service in limited #SpectrumAllocation basically indefinitely because #CellBroadcast was made mandatory and #EmergencyCalling in case of disaster can only work long reliably when the cell networks downgrade to #GSM.

  • #NewZealand does this all the time, including restricting #calls to #EmergencyServices in cases of big earthquakes so people in need of help get prioritized whilst everyone else can send out "I'm okay!" messages via #SMS and not tie up bandwith...

#WorstCase I could test said #Narrowband capabilities with #w3m on am artificially throttled to 2400 bit/s connection...

As for FrogFind WAP Edition that @ActionRetro wants to to continue that development, I can get like a German 2G SIM & potentially devices that do WAP for him setup somewhere, but to make some "remote testing" feasible, it'll likely need like some "ghettohacked" #WAP phone to allow screen capture/streaming and input recieval, and I'm not confident enough in reverse-engineering that.

  • Maybe #dosdude1 can do that and if #ActionRetro needs like a place to shove a #Pi0W and a frankenstein'd phone somewhere then I can make that work.
