An aside.
Why can’t the BBC (national, not local news) stop reporting that Sam Fender is from #Newcastle ? He’s not. #NorthShields
If someone was from Croydon it wouldn’t be reported as London, would it? Is it really beyond southern media to report accurately on items in the north?
@TalktoBeverley @TheConversationUK I don't think I'd notice anything amiss if someone from Croydown was described as "from London". It's firmly in Greater London.
But even if it wasn't, North Shields is definitely part of Newcastle's urban sprawl.
I once had an excruciating interaction with a new postgrad at work, who was from South Shields. He asked where I was from, I replied "here" (my accent is not identifiably local), then he kept asking for more detail until he'd established I'm from Washington, at which point he told me I'm most definitely not from here.
Given that everyone else with us was from outside the UK, I think "here" was a perfectly reasonable answer!
You have your opinion, I have mine.
By your calculation, #NorthShields #Tynemouth #Cullercoats and #WhitleyBay should all be classified as #Newcastle too.
I suppose by your logic you’re from Sunderland.
You know you said you had an “excruciating” conversation? That’s how I’m finding this exchange.
You said you were from Washington.
As far as I’m concerned the two are not the same, nor are the characteristics/culture of towns and cities and their occupants just because they’re geographically close or they’re linked by bureaucracy.
Goodnight.
