You can support the Palestinian people without supporting Hamas. You can support the Ukrainian people, oppose Russia, and oppose American imperialism at the same time.

Do you see the common thread?

You can support the everyday people being oppressed without taking the side of any oppressor.

An important note to my Palestinian friends in Gaza: please do not favourite, boost, share, or otherwise show support publicly for any of my posts wherein I criticise Hamas, including the one above. I would urge you to avoid the topic entirely in public discourse here. This is for your own safety.

Also, to any keyboard warriors who want to have philosophical conversations about Hamas with people from Gaza (or worse, want them to denounce them) as you sit in your comfy armchair enjoying the safety of your gilded Western abode: don’t. They don’t owe you anything and you could be putting their lives at risk.

@aral
Thank you, you know what's happening with us in Ghayrah, and no one likes Hamas. Thank you, Aaron.
@aral
Thank you very much for your concern for me, because I am thinking about how to get food and how to register my daughters in university. I do not want to deprive them of their education.
@aral
Ask anyone in Gaza and you will find that they will be happy when Hamas's rule changes.
@aral Aral, I think we should trust the very intelligent people of Gaza to know how to protect their own safety on social media, something they’re very practiced at? Palestinians in Gaza criticize or otherwise engage with the topic of H all the time… not sure what the implication is here unless you’re equating that with something else entirely. What you’ve also unintentionally done is set a boundary around who is and isn’t allowed to speak on this topic: only non-Palestinians. Maybe worth a pause to reflect.

@divya Anyone can talk about whatever they want, however they want to.

I’m in a position where I’m being followed by a large number of Palestinians from Gaza and speaking out against Hamas. Not all of them are experts at how Mastodon works or the reach or permanence of ActivityPub. My post is to inform them that favoriting, boosting, etc., my posts could be visible to Hamas. That is all.

And given Hamas was just publicly executing people in the streets of Gaza this week, I’d rather have warned them about this than not, given the possible repercussions.

I’m not policing what anyone can or cannot say. I’m asking the people I care about to please protect themselves. A post criticising Hamas on the fediverse isn’t going to change the world so I’d rather not see it get someone I care about killed.

But everyone is free to speak their own mind and that includes me warning my friends to be careful.

@aral I feel like you should read this reply back and assess what intelligence you’re granting to them, though? People in Gaza have had to deal with extreme Israeli surveillance online their whole lives; it’s not a foreign concept. That’s all I mean. I’m not saying not to advise people on how this specific app works, it’s just that maybe we should pause before advising on something out of our wheelhouse.

Two other things - H isn’t trawling through the likes of every social media post criticizing them, nor is it publicly executing people who weren’t literally murdering their neighbors. Regardless of our opinions as outsiders, journalist Saleh Ja’farawi was kidnapped, tortured, and shot seven times in an execution by Israeli agents armed, trained, and funded by the occupation. (Those agents died in two firefights with security forces, and the remaining were arrested.) That’s not the same as the common Ghazawi criticizing their government, which they do all the time. This equivocation, between dissent and actively carrying out a genocide, is a zionist talking point (“civil war”) that has been criticized extensively the past several days by Palestinians from all sorts of different political backgrounds, partly because it has emerged as a curious piece of hasbara at the same time as certain international powers express interest in occupying Gaza with their own “security forces.”

This is where our discretion is vital…

@aral and to be clear: I’m not trying to accuse you of anything or police your language! Just a gentle call-in… you hold a lot of power on this site and people are reliant on you

@divya I appreciate that you care and I understand your point; as, I hope, you do mine.

💕

@aral We will disagree and that's fine.

@divya > People in Gaza have had to deal with extreme Israeli surveillance online their whole lives; it’s not a foreign concept.

And yet still everyone uses WhatsApp.

I’m not granting or not granting intelligence to Palestinians because they’re Palestinian. It’s tech literacy; the same as everywhere else. Living under constant surveillance doesn’t mean you’re fluent in protecting yourself from it, it just means you’re living under constant surveillance. Something Americans should surely understand. My advice here is no different to the advice I give to anyone who is going to travel to the US and has criticised Trump publicly.

And it’s just that: advice. Take it or leave it, that’s your choice. My conscience is clear. It wouldn’t be had I not warned you and you suffered the consequences because of it.

@aral No no, I get and appreciate this, and obviously this is your profession. But it's in the context of the other points I make. I think we're speaking past each other and I'll gladly leave you to this, but I hope that you can sit with the other criticisms.

Further context for the lurkers (I will not see interactions with this) - even Sky and Haaretz have debunked this “executing civilians” lie. It’s zionist atrocity propaganda.

@aral oh look another white man giving patronizing advice to marginalized people. Check your privilege. And when multiple brown people call you out, don’t write an essay. Check your privilege again. Sit with it. Or you are no better than any other oppressor we encounter.

@shantini Thanks, Shantini. I’ll let my Turkish parents know I’m a white man now.

Do fuck off.

@aral @shantini 😂😂😂😂😂

@shantini @aral @divya
I mean we must focus on helping people of Gaza.

Discussion about ally and enemy logic, about errors made by sincere people fighting for Palestine, about this kind of logic which make that even an expert for bicycles like me must not speak about that when oppressed people are near, etc... are details compared to situation in Gaza.

I have severe criticism about American way of being woke which isn't the only way sorry, but I prefer just quote this:

Naomi Klein, disaster capitalism and alternative facts

After Donald Trump's victory, a question haunts many of us: how could so many people elect someone who talks nonsense, lies daily, and yet his supporters don’t seem to hold him accountable for those lies? At its core, these are broader questions : how has…

@shantini @aral Hoo boy as a lady in tech I feel this frustration.

The thing is, on the US census Middle Eastern people are described as “white,” but that doesn’t reflect a Middle Eastern person’s lived experience. Sammy Obeid has a great bit about how that came to be, even https://www.instagram.com/reel/DLn149os9RG/?hl=en

And again, we are US people in tech. It’s not oppression Olympics, and @aral is speaking to a lot of Palestinians whose trust he has earned. 1/2

@shantini @aral Point being sometimes it’s also helpful for *us* to sit w/ why we react to 💩 we see on the Internet (a lesson I’ve learned /also as a person we call white in this millennium). Aral is Middle Eastern, lives in an increasingly anti immigrant country, and is speaking from that experience-please don’t jump down throats.

All this to say, I feel you and have felt this in the past. But we can also trust his Palestinian friends to hold him to account 2/2

@aral My words for the last two years. I might add: You can oppose Israel's policies without being antisemitic. I just don't understand why so many people - even academics - are uncapable of differentiating 🙈🤷‍♀️
@HNumberger The latter must be especially hard given you’re in Germany. Lots of love and solidarity 💕
@aral Can you support Ukraine without supporting the Zelenskyy governments right to the state monopoly on violence?
@DavyJones @aral
Russia is a terrorist state. Putin is a wanted war criminal.

@DavyJones @aral

Aral did not say Ukraine, he said "the Ukrainian people". Big difference.

@aral Yes. It’s actually the authoritarians who try to convince us of the opposite.

Because they are:
1) Stupid and boring simpletons who can’t be helped
2) When not so stupid, fearful zero-sum-games types whose first instinct is to lie

@aral VERY important point, and one that most people forget. This is the elites and governments doing all this, not regular people.
@aral Thank you for your beautiful and wonderful words, my brother. We hope the same from everyone, and thank you to them all, my brother May God bless you for your kind efforts. We will not forget your help and standing by our side 🫶❤🇵🇸
