I'm used typing on Model M buckling springs.

I have a keyboard with Cherry MX Blue that I rarely use because I don't like the keyboard case.

But I like how they both click!

Currently daily driver has Akko Cilantro, which are really nice but I'm not into the "tapdancing on plastic" sound it makes.

I'm now eyeing a new keyboard case, and am looking for an old-school feeling-and-sounding clicky switch. Any recommendations?

@pixelambacht @PurpleJillybeans don’t like Unicomp’s buckling spring keyboards? https://www.pckeyboard.com/

Or really open wallet with these folk’s even better recreations https://www.modelfkeyboards.com/store/

I found Cherry Blues way too light in feeling compared to original buckling spring. Cherry green and clears/white are supposed to be heavier and even those (while better than blue) still not quite right. They’re fine in their own right but still different.

@colinstu @PurpleJillybeans I'm specifically looking for switches, so I can put them in a different keyboard. I've never seen buckling spring switches being sold? I'm not interested in full keyboards—I'm lucky to have original Model M SSKs to type on!

Cherry green sounds interesting. Clears sound too much like tapdancing on plastic here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6xtTrQAO600

@pixelambacht @PurpleJillybeans I’ve never done it myself, but isn't lubing up switches and putting those rubber rings on them etc also take down that plasticy-ness of them? (not to mention how the PCB is mounted / metal backplates and all that jazz)

I'm reminded why I gave up on this rabbit hole xD
Hope something good is found though.

Not sure what they (in this pic) mean by heavy vs soft click but yeah Green may be more desired.

@colinstu @PurpleJillybeans Ah, whites are different from clears! Yeah, it's a rabbit hole and I'm not sure if I like the work of lubing, putting dampening stuff on them, etc... But we'll see, I also said I'd never move to modern keyboards 🙂

@pixelambacht @PurpleJillybeans this handy lil matrix too. Yeah there is a difference between the two. And it's frustrating because there used to be older generations of clears/whites where things have swapped/changed around over time / was not consistent.

This is how it should be these days though.

@pixelambacht I’ve dabbled in the enthusiast switch scene for the last few years; it’s an exciting time. Highly recommend reading https://www.theremingoat.com/
