The Solo Instance Problem

PeerTube
I would not use this video by itself as an explainer for people looking to start an instance because it doesn't contain a single mention of relays, which can be a major gamechanger for small servers. Relays are a deep topic, but among the many options are general purpose firehose relays, relays which only allow instances adjacent to a certain topic (such as tech, or role-playing games) to join, and relays such as fedibuzz which allow a small instance to follow hashtags, or the public posts of other whole instances. https://kingsboroughlibtech.commons.gc.cuny.edu/2024/10/05/fediverse-relays/ https://relaylist.com/ If you're looking to make an explainer video for people who want to start a tiny or solo instance for any of the valid reasons to do so (such as being the sole arbiter of which instances are blocked), that would be a very valuable asset, but mention of relays (and blocklists) would be essential!
@[email protected] we’ve got many videos and articles on relays and hashtag relays because they are actually the top reason people cancel their solo-instances.
Users fill their content cache trying to recreate the experience of a larger instance with friends, but don’t have the friends to split the costs with.
Selective relay are the best. You can subscribe to hashtags and instances individualy. https://relay.fedi.buzz
