I still don’t know how I missed it last fall, but The Empusium is my favorite novel of the year by a mile. Stellar translation from Antonia Lloyd Jones. The critics who found it trivial are my enemies.
I recommend going in cold if you can, and will note that the audio edition read by Natasha Soudek is top-notch and helps a lot with the sounds of the names and language. (I always go audio-first with Tokarczuk if I can.)
Oh and the subtitle is fucking with you. That’s about all I can say about it that.
