Hey can someone make a Firefox addon that replaces the names of tech billionaires by prefixing them with "Serial liar and perpetrator of investment fraud"

For example "Sam Altman Wants 250 Gigawatts of Power. Is That Possible?" would become "Serial Liar and Perpetrator of Investment Fraud Sam Altman Wants 250 Gigawatts of Power. Is That Possible?"

Or "Serial Liar and Perpetrator of Investment Fraud Sam Altman’s OpenAI Is Officially the World’s Most Valuable Startup at $500B"

@eniko a nice starting point might be the plugin that replaced mentions Pol (R, OK) or whatever with Pol (R, Oil, Health insurance, Law firms) or whatever.

Either way, we can't really do the thing that would actually be useful: fixing it for other people who need to read that...

@aes no, but it would still brighten up my day whenever i have to see anything related to these rich fuckwits
@eniko There were several simple text replacement addons over the years. I'm gonna try this one later to do just that in my browser :v
[ there was a link here, but the extension wanted too many permissions, so it got kicked out instantly ]

@eniko I bet someone could patch cloud-to-butt. 😉

I know there is something like deadname replacer that you can have stuff replaced in web pages and it could be similar or usable
@eniko Oops, I accidentally made it recursive.
@kojack i think it still works
@eniko It didn't crash at least. :)
(Grease Monkey script)
@eniko it really drives the point home 🤔

I think it's safe to indeed replace it instead of prepending — why keep the original name, they are all the same, no one can tell the difference 😆
@m0xEE @kojack @eniko you can also stick the name in the middle like it’s a jokey nickname: Sam “Serial Liar and Perennial Investment Fraud” Altman promised today to change everything with his Bullshit Generator
@kojack @eniko Seeing the phrase "AI boom" there prompted the idea of also correcting that to "AI bubble". Or "chatbot bubble" if you prefer.
@eniko Replace Sam Altman with Michael Altman and AGI with a marker
@eniko
Could it also postfix those titles with "is it even something we might want as a society ?"
@eniko is there a Betteridge’s Law plugin?
@eniko there's one that transformed billionaire to oligarchs
@eniko
I had a chrome addon on my pc that replaced pix of Trump with pix of kittens. Did wonders for my mental health
@eniko There was an extension a while back text replaced serval notable idiots with humourous substitutes. I can't seem to find it now.
Perhaps grease monkey scripts might be the ideal location.
@eniko that's a project I would join. Adding to the list "convicted sexual predator Donald Trump"
@eniko I want to make one that replaces every kind of "we care about your privacy and take safeguarding your personal data seriously" with "we're a greedy fucking corporation that loves to exploit you and we don't give a fuck about doxxing you or leaking your SSN"

@eniko

And International Criminal Court Fugitive Benjamin Netanyahu, please.

@eniko Mozilla should add that by default
@eniko But what about the few who are actually nice and honest, such as... um... well... never mind.

@matias @eniko

Mackenzie Scott. I can't think of a second one, though.

@eniko I don't think that's the worst thing the guy's done, his little sister's story rings true to my ears
@ifixcoinops his what now
@eniko @ifixcoinops
Welcome to today's unlucky 10000.
Altman's younger sister has alleged he sexually abused her when they were children.
@silvermoon82 @eniko her lawsuit was massive news for like an hour nine months ago and then the story got dropped Conspicuously Abruptly, to the point where if you didn't happen to be online that afternoon then you don't know about it. Can't even find a followup.
@ifixcoinops @silvermoon82 oh cool, awesome
@eniko @silvermoon82 yeah the details are grim and Sam Altman's textbook-DARVO response is even grimmer
@silvermoon82 @eniko @ifixcoinops im tired of being among the 10000 sometimes

@SRAZKVT @silvermoon82 @eniko I get that a LOT on Fedi

Like, this is where you'll find out first that some awesome open-source Thing that was Extremely Good has gone and given money to fascists or whatever, stuff like that, and I suspect it's because a lot of people on here have a very strong sense of justice, and then you, like... can't go back to not knowing? And now you must Change The Way You Do Things, to still, like... respect yourself and the choices you make?

While elsewhere in, like, the world outside, folk just happily chuck a dollar in a vending machine and get a Nestlé Crunch bar because they taste good and they don't know about the millions of babies that Nestlé starved to death

Knowing is not a bad thing, it's a good thing, but it's also an exhausting thing sometimes and I think it's okay to acknowledge that. Like I think maybe even we have to acknowledge that, because it's so lonely otherwise

@ifixcoinops @silvermoon82 @eniko oh i don't need to restructure anything, i wasn't using his shit in the first place, but i do wonder why i never heard about it before, despite that being exactly the kind of thing i should be aware of

@SRAZKVT @silvermoon82 @eniko yeah me either, sorry I was waffling In General and being sad about how I really like Crunch bars

But also yeah it's wild how that story just disappeared

@eniko it's not text but for photos - but there is Make America Kittens again, # maka

It replaces photos from specified people with photos of kittens :)

@eniko
I used to have a lot of fun doing exactly this kind of thing with FoxReplace

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/foxreplace/

FoxReplace – Get this Extension for 🦊 Firefox (en-US)

Download FoxReplace for Firefox. Lets you replace text in web pages. You can define a substitution list and apply it automatically or at your own discretion, or make individual substitutions. You can use this as a filter, or just for fun :)

@eniko sounds like a trivial fork of https://github.com/panicsteve/cloud-to-butt to me. Except for the list of names. But that probably doesn't change super often? Maybe a monthly (GitHub actions) scheduled job can update from Wikipedia if you want to be fancy.

@eniko @eniko I forget what it's called but several years ago I found an extension that was designed to remove and replace explicit words from websites and also muted audio from a video when the caption includes explicit language. It can be customized to do exactly what you're describing, as you can enter your own custom words to replace, as well as what to replace them with.

@eniko It also works for some product names, e.g.:

Billionaire arms dealer Palmer Luckey’s ModRetro Chromatic.
